DURHAM, N.C.—Former Duke midfield standout Myles Jones was selected in the fourth round of the 2016 National Lacrosse League Draft by the New England Black Wolves. Jones was taken with the 37th pick overall.
The NLL is a professional indoor box lacrosse league featuring nine teams overall. The league plays its games in the winter and spring ranging from January to June. The National Lacrosse League currently plays an 18-game regular season with three teams from each division qualifying for postseason play.
Jones is coming off of his rookie season in Major League Lacrosse, finishing his first season with 17 goals, including four two-point scores, and 13 assists for 34 points. The No. 1 overall pick by the MLL draft by the Atlanta Blaze, he played in two games for the expansion team before being traded to the Chesapeake Bayhawks. With the Bayhawks he tallied 15 goals and 12 assists for 31 points.
A two-time National Midfielder of the Year, the Long Island native is arguably the best midfielder to wear a Duke uniform and one of the best to play Division I lacrosse. In 2016, Jones finished second on the team in scoring with 70 points from 33 goals and 37 assists. His 37 assists are tied for seventh in Duke single-season history and matched his personal-best and midfield record set last season.
Jones, the 2016 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, made history in 2016, becoming the first midfielder in NCAA Division I lacrosse history to record 100 goals and 100 assists in his career. He currently holds the Duke single-season and career records for a midfielder in points and assists and ranks second in goals.
Overall, his 231 points rank seventh in Duke history, while his 105 assists are fifth and 126 goals are 12th. Jones ranks seventh on the single-season list in assists (37) and 11th in points (77). One of 11 Blue Devils all-time to earn All-ACC honors three times in his career, Jones' 231 points are the second most among midfielders in NCAA history, behind Gary Gait's 253. He is one of five midfielders to reach the 200-point benchmark and currently ranks second among all players in career points. The 40 goals he scored in 2015 are 22nd among midfielders in NCAA history.
New England opens its 2017 season Jan. 7 at the Rochester Knighthawks. Former Blue Devil defensive standout Michael Manley is a member of the Knighthawks when he was acquired from the Black Wolves. Manley is entering his fifth season in the NLL after earning MLL Defensive Player of the Year honors.
In addition to Manley, Blue Devil great Zack Greer is a standout forward recently traded to the Colorado Mammoth. Greer is one of just six players in the league to score 40-plus goals in each of the past two seasons. He recently helped the Saskatchewan Rush to the title in 2016.
