DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke men's soccer team dominated Pittsburgh in all facets off the game, but couldn't find that elusive second goal, battling the Panthers to a 1-1 draw in ACC play Friday night at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils held a 16-8 edge in shots over the 110 minutes.
The Blue Devils move to 3-2-2 overall and 0-2-1 in ACC action. Pittsburgh is now 1-5-2 and 0-2-1 in conference play.
Duke got off to a quick start when Brian White drew a penalty kick just 26 seconds into the game. Goalkeeper Robert Moewes provided the long service and Ryan Thompson flicked it over behind the Pittsburgh defense that forced the Panther goalkeeper to come off of his line and foul White in the penalty box. White stepped up to the penalty spot and buried the shot for his third goal of the year.
The Blue Devils completely controlled play over the next 20 minutes, moving the ball quickly and not allowing Pittsburgh to get touches. Duke found great success attacking down both flanks to put services across the face of the goal but couldn't make that final finish for a second score.
Duke appeared to lose a touch of its momentum midway through the half. While the Panthers were unable to find space to create scoring opportunities, they did take advantage of a corner kick from the left side. Darcy Bloemen served the ball to the back post where Luca Mellor got his head on the ball just enough to send it high and past the outstretched arms Moewes.
Devils came right back at Pitt, forcing Panther keeper Mika Outcalt to make a pair of saves in the 26th 28th minutes. Duke, in the 44th minute, earned a second penalty kick as the Panthers were whistled for a hand ball on a Torbjørn Alseth shot was knocked down. However, Outcalt was outstanding in the guessing right to stop the shot and send the teams into the locker room even at 1-1.
The second half was much of the same story for the Blue Devils. Duke gave Pittsburgh fits on the wings, serving in cross after cross, but were unable to connect. Pitt nearly scored an own goal deflecting a Thompson free kick off its own cross bar.
In the closing seconds of regulation it appeared that perhaps Duke would earn a third penalty kick, but no foul was whistled and the Blue Devils and Panthers headed to overtime.
Pittsburgh managed just one shot in the second half and no corner kicks, while the Blue Devils had eight shots and three corner kicks.
The first half featured very no quality scoring chances over the 10 minutes forcing the teams to play that final 10-minute period. Junior outside midfielder Macario Hing-Glover provided a spark for the Blue Devils in the final overtime, creating havoc on the right side. In a great individual effort he slid a ball across the face of the goal, but a sprinting Jared Golestani wasn't able to get on the other end of it en route to the 1-1 draw after 110 minutes.
Moewes finished with two saves in the draw, while Outcalt had six.
The Blue Devils are back in action Sept. 27 against Georgia State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.
