DURHAM, N.C.—Georgia State benefitted from a Duke own goal in the 106th minute to come away with the 2-1 double overtime victory over the Blue Devils in non-conference men's soccer action this evening. Cameron Moseley was the goal scorer for Duke in the setback.
“I think we just didn't execute,” said head coach John Kerr. “And it's a shame because it's not for a lack of effort. The boys are giving everything they got. They're just not executing in the final third and we're paying the price.”
In a wide open game Duke (3-3-2) was able to generate numerous quality chances through the 106 minutes, but was just off the mark. The Blue Devils struck the post in the second half, had a couple sail over the bar and a few headers that were just not quite good enough to beat Georgia State (6-4-0) goalkeeper Yannic Horn.
While the Panthers did officially take 15 shots, few of their chances were particularly dangerous as Duke goalie Robert Moewes was forced to make just four saves, three of which came in the second half.
The Blue Devils had the first good look at goal after excellent one-touch passing from Kevon Black and Brian White sent Jared Golestani in behind the Panther defense. The senior striker ran onto it, but couldn't get enough pace on it to get it past the retreating defender.
Duke got on the scoreboard in the 39th minute on another short corner play. Bryson Asher made the short pass to Suniel Veerakone who whipped the ball into the back post where Moseley headed it home for his second goal of the year and a 1-0 Duke lead.
Sporting its third halftime lead of the year, the Blue Devils were excellent in the second half. Moving the ball quickly all over the field it appeared that elusive second goal Duke has struggled with was on the horizon.
Max Moser had a fantastic strike hit the woodwork in the 53rd minute and two minutes later Markus Fjørtoft had a header saved by Horn.
In the 75th minute, Georgia State took advantage of a lull in Duke's defensive effort as Nick Hague slide the ball into the box for Max Hemmings. The sophomore midfielders ran in behind the defense and slipped a shot under Moewes to tie the game.
Duke junior midfielder Cody Brinkman nearly put the Blue Devils ahead in the 83rd minute with a one-timer that sailed just over the bar. Asher had a header saved by Horn in the 86th minute as the Blue Devils headed to overtime for the second straight game.
The first overtime featured five shots overall with the Blue Devils having the better of the looks. Brian White had a shot blocked and a header saved, while the Panthers never threatened despite attempting two shots.
Finally in the 106th minute, capitalizing on a no-call from the referee, the Panthers countered Duke's defense and swung in a cross to the penalty area where a Duke defender headed it in the goal to give Georgia State the win.
Duke makes the short trip to Raleigh Friday night to take on ACC foe NC State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.
