TIBURON, Calif. – Duke alumna Ashley Twichell took home the women's elite title at the 2016 RCP Tiburon Mile Sunday. The win was Twichell's third straight in the open water event.
Twichell edged Great Britain's Keri-Anne Payne in a photo finish, turning in a time of 26:06.
A 2011 graduate of Duke, Twichell previously won the Tiburon Mile in 2015 and 2013. The event was not held in 2014.
Twichell is coming off of a strong season in the pool, which culminated in a finals appearance in the 800-meter freestyle at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. The Fayetteville, N.Y., native was fifth overall in the event (8:29.85) and earned a top-12 finish in the 400 freestyle as well.
In April, Twichell bested the field at the Open Water Festival 10K race in Miromar Lakes, Fla. She claimed the national championship with a time of 2:01.51.78.
