Rebecca Quinn won her first career Olympic medal Friday as her Canada Women's National Team defeated host Brazil, 2-1, in the bronze medal match played at the Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
It marked the second consecutive bronze medal for Canada at the Women's Olympic Tournament.
Canada got on the board in the first half as Ashley Lawrence made an 80-yard run from her own penalty area all the way to Brazil's, before looking up to find Deanne Rose 10 yards from the goal-line. Rose received the pass and gave Canada a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.
At the half, Canada led 1-0 in front of nearly 50,000 fans.
Canada then went ahead 2-0 in the 52nd minute as Christine Sinclair scored from 12 yards out off an assist from Rose. Sinclair took a touch before dispatching a shot into the bottom right corner to double Canada's lead.
Rose almost scored her second of the match six minutes later when she ran onto a flicked header by Melissa Tancredi. Rose got one-on-one with Brazil goalkeeper, Barbara, but her shot hit the Brazilian goalkeeper's right post and went out.
In the 79th minute, Beatriz scored to cut Canada's lead to 2-1. The forward received the ball with her back to goal from a flicked on header from Erika off a Rafaelle throw-in. Beatriz then took a touch, turned her defender before shooting past Canada's keeper with her left foot.
Quinn did not see action in the bronze medal match, but did make two starts and come off the bench in two other matches during Olympic play.
In six matches at Rio 2016, Canada posted five wins and one loss. After wins over Australia (2:0), Zimbabwe (3:1), and Germany (2:1) in the group phase, they defeated France 1:0 in the quarter-finals, before falling to Germany in the semi-final.
Canada's victory set a new Canada Soccer record of 15 international wins on the calendar year.
It also marks the first time since 1908 that Canada has won back-to-back medals in a team sport at the Summer Olympics.
