RIO DE JANEIRO – Former Duke diver Abby Johnston will have a chance to contend for her second Olympic medal after qualifying for the women's individual 3-meter diving finals. Johnston tied for fifth in Saturday's semifinals and will be one of 12 divers looking to make it onto the podium Sunday in Rio.
After earning a score of 333.60 points in Friday's preliminary round, Johnston completed her list with a total of 324.75 points Saturday at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center.
A former NCAA champion at Duke and current medical school student, Johnston moved up 10 spots following her second dive. She then received 69.75 points on her most difficult dive, a forward 3 ½ somersault before topping the 63-point mark on each of her final two efforts.
“I feel really good about the way I dove tonight,” Johnston said. “I think I was a little more nervous today than I was yesterday, and I hope I can be more confident tomorrow. I'm just excited to do my last list of dives out there.”
Chinese divers Shi Tingmao (385.00) and He Zi (365.05) notched the highest scores of the semifinals. All divers' scores will reset for Sunday's final, which is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET on NBC and NBCOlympics.com.
Johnston previously claimed a silver medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in women's synchronized 3-meter diving. A native of Upper Arlington, Ohio, she plans to retire from diving following the Olympic Games.
