RIO DE JANEIRO - Duke graduate Shannon Rowbury is set to represent the United States in her third consecutive Olympic Games Friday, as she takes the start line for the preliminary round of the women's 1,500. Rowbury is set to compete in the third heat of the preliminary rounds, which is scheduled to begin at 7:52 p.m. (ET).
Rowbury qualified for the Olympics after placing second at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in July, clocking a time of 4:05.39. The current American record holder at 1,500 meters with a time of 3:56.29, Rowbury looks to build off her previous success at the Olympics, where she posted back-to-back top-10 finishes in the 1,500 at both the Beijing and London Games.
While attending Duke, Rowbury claimed All-America honors at 1,500m during the 2006 campaign. Rowbury, a native of San Francisco, Calif., posted the second-fastest 1,500 time in program history, registering a mark of 4:14.81 during the 2015 season.
