DURHAM, N.C.—Six former Blue Devils will begin their quest for their first Major League Lacrosse Championship this weekend with the semifinal games of the MLL Playoffs. The two semifinals will be played August 13 in Connecticut and Minnesota.
Brendan Fowler, Will Haus and Patrick Resch will suit up for the No. 4 seed Charlotte Hounds. They will go up against top-seeded Ohio Machine at National Sports Center Stadium in Blaine, Minn. Faceoff is set for 6:30 p.m. (ET).
Luke Duprey, David Lawson and Jake Tripucka will don the New York Lizards jersey in the first semifinal of the weekend against the Denver Outlaws. That game will face off at 4 p.m., (ET) at Rafferty Stadium on the campus of Fairfield University.
The 2016 MLL season was one of parity with seven of the league's nine teams finishing with 8-6 records. The Ohio Machine earned the top seed, while the Hounds edged the Boston Cannons for the final playoff spot.
Haus was named the Warrior Defensive Player of the Week after recording a goal and five ground balls in the playoff clinching win over the Bayhawks. The second-year player was crucial on the faceoff wing as well as Fowler won 12-of-17 faceoffs in the game and picked up seven ground balls.
Haus, in 2016, has totaled three goals, two assists, 39 groundballs and 10 caused turnovers in 13 regular-season games. Fowler has won 171-of-346 restarts (.494) and picked up 69 ground balls in his 12 games. He also has three goals and an assist.
Resch, playing in six games for the Hounds, owns a goal and six ground balls.
In the other semifinal, Lawson is having the best year of his four-year career with 32 goals, including three two-point efforts, and nine assists for 44 points. He has 12 goals and 17 points in the previous five games combined.
Tripucka, having played in just six games, has registered just two goals and an assist in 2016, while Duprey has 15 ground balls and six caused turnovers in his eight outings.
