DURHAM, N.C.—Duke sophomore Brad Smith and incoming freshman Terry Lindsay became the 18th and 19th Blue Devils to bring home gold from the Federation of International Lacrosse Men's U19 World Championship. The United States staged a comeback for the ages to beat Canada 13-12 in the gold medal game.
Ryan Conrad capped an incredible comeback by the United States, which trailed 8-2 at the half and 11-9 with seven to play, handling Simon Mathias' pass from behind the cage in traffic in front of the goal, and burying a shot with eight seconds to play to lift Team USA to the 13-12 victory.
Smith, a starter on the first midfield, finished the tournament with three goals and six assists for nine points. Lindsay had four ground balls in the six games. Duke equipment manager Jay Bissette also was on the Team USA for the second consecutive time. He was a member of the 2012 squad that also won gold.
Trailing by two with 7:04 to play, Mac O'Keefe made it a one goal game just over a minute later. Jared Bernhardt completed the comeback with the tying goal at the 2:34 mark to set up the wild finish.
Austin Henningsen, who had dominated on faceoffs throughout the second half for the U.S., won the faceoff after Bernhardt's goal. Tyler Dunn held the ball for most of the possession for the U.S., even after a stall warning was put on. Bernhardt started a drive from the left wing, but was cut off and the U.S. moved the ball behind. Mathias found a cutting Conrad and he buried the feed for the game winner.
The U.S. outscored Canada 5-1 in the final quarter, and four of the five goals were assisted.
Henningsen and U.S. goalie Willie Klan played major roles in the U.S. comeback. Henningsen won 15-of-26 faceoffs in the game and Klan overcame a slow start. After making just one save in the first half, Klan made seven in the second half, including five in the fourth quarter.
The victory snapped a three-tournament winning streak for Canada in FIL world championship play. Canada won the 2014 men's senior championship, the 2015 women's U19 championship and the 2015 men's indoor championship.
