BOSTON –Senior Deemer Class scored five goals and had six points overall to lead the Blue Devils to a 15-8 win over Boston University to close their regular season schedule. Eight different Blue Devils got in the goal scoring column as they await the NCAA Tournament selection tonight.
Duke improves to 11-7 overall, reaching the 11-win benchmark for the 10th straight season. Boston University falls to 8-7. The NCAA Tournament selection show will be aired tonight from 9-10 p.m., on ESPNU.
Boston University, knotted with Duke 1-1 after the first quarter, took the lead 58 seconds into the second quarter on a tally from Cal Dearth. Junior Jack Bruckner answered for the Blue Devils two minutes later to spark a 5-0 run that put Duke in front 6-2 with 5:26 to play in the second period.
The Terriers ended their skid at 9:24 with a goal from Ryan Hillburn, but the Blue Devils offense continued to fire on all cylinders in adding two more goals in for the 8-3 halftime lead. Class keyed the run with three goals and an assist.
Defensively, the Blue Devils were excellent in the first half. Danny Fowler made four crucial stops in the first quarter to keep the Terriers to just one goal and the Duke defense held Boston U to just two shots in the second quarter.
Duke extended its lead to as many as nine, 12-3, with a 4-0 run to start the third quarter. Junior Ian Yanulis, a Duxbury, Mass, native, recorded his first career goal, scoring off the faceoff win by Kyle Rowe.
After the Terriers pulled back within seven, 13-6, the Blue Devils got goals from Bruckner and Myles Jones to go back in front by nine, 15-6.
Hillburn finished with a team-best five points from a goal and four assists, while James Burr had three goals and an assist for the Terriers.
Rowe finished the afternoon 15-of-21 from the X and 10 ground balls. Fowler made six saves in 55 minutes of action, allowing four goals. Christian Carson-Banister posted 15 saves for the Terriers in goal.
