DURHAM, N.C. – The momentum from the Duke rowing program's first NCAA Championships bid continued Thursday as the Blue Devils received multiple Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Region 3 awards. Megan Cooke Carcagno was named the Head Coach of the Year while senior Katie Dukovich, senior Alex Stonehill and sophomore Katherine Maitland were named to the all-region squads and junior Phoebe Donovan, sophomore Jessica Findlay, senior Sarah Wall and senior Mary Wilson were Scholar-Athlete Award winners.
“The past few weeks have been phenomenal for Duke, and we feel honored to receive this attention,” Cooke Carcagno said. “Congratulations to Alex and Katie for making First Team All-Region. Maitland's second team honors also speak to the depth and talent of this incredible team.”
Cooke Carcagno picked up her second coach of the year honor after being the ACC recipient at the league's championship event. With the CRCA regional award, Cooke Carcagno is now up for Division I Staff of the Year selection. In her first year with the program, Cooke Carcagno helped Duke to its first NCAA Championships appearance in program history as well as a second-place finish at the ACC Championship. The Blue Devils enter the NCAA event with their highest ranking in program history, at No. 12 in the latest CRCA poll. Cooke Carcagno is the second Blue Devil to receive Region Coach of the Year status, as Robyn Horner was tabbed in 2002.
“I'm honored by coach of the region, but it should be staff of the region because everything is a team effort,” Cooke Carcagno added. “I owe Chase Graham, Chuck Rodosky, Meaghan McMillen and Simon Carcagno every bit of credit that I am receiving. Our team is strong and it's an amazing feeling to be putting on that Duke t-shirt right now.”
Dukovich and Stonehill were First Team All-ACC selections and added First Team CRCA All-Region 3 awards to their resumes. Maitland was a second team honoree. Dukovich earned her third all-region honor as she was also a first team member in 2013 and 2014. The pick was the first for Stonehill and Maitland, who have both accepted invitations to their respective countries' Women's U23 National Team Selection Camps. The three All-Region honorees are the most for Duke since three in 2006.
At the ACC Championship, the trio helped the V8 to second place with a year-best 6:20.444 mark in helping Duke come in second overall, its best at the event since 2006. The V8 entered the league's main event as the No. 5 seed and outrowed the competition to come in second, with a photo finish ahead of Syracuse.
Rounding out the award winners were Duke's four CRCA Scholar-Athlete selections. To receive the honor, the rower must have a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA for her career through the 2015 fall semester; meet all eligibility rules as defined by her institution; be in her second, third or fourth year of eligibility; and been a member of her institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75% of the current spring races or racing in a regional event.
Duke has had at least three student-athletes recognized for academic success by the CRCA for the last six years.
Donovan, a public policy and global health major, was a primary member of the V8 before shifting to the 2V8 for the tail end of the season, including the ACC Championship, where she helped the boat from a No. 3 seed to a second-place finish with a photo finish against Notre Dame. Findlay, a biology major, held her position as a member of the V8 for the entire campaign and this month accepted an invitation to the Women's U23 National Team Selection Camp for the United Kingdom. Wall, a psychology major, and Wilson, a psychology and public policy major, have been the anchors of Duke's V4 with Wall as the coxswain and Wilson the stroke. The duo guided the V4 to second at the ACC Championship and a pair of firsts at the Dale England Cup with victories against No. 14 Indiana and No. 17 Notre Dame.
Duke returns to the water Friday for the NCAA Championships at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif. The Blue Devils will begin with the V8 at 12:24 p.m., the 2V8 set to race at 1:12 p.m. and V4 at 2:12 p.m.
“I'm looking forward to having a record-setting weekend for our team,” Cooke Carcagno said. “They have never rowed better and I'm excited to see what they can do. Every single member on this team is in a new position, but the nice thing about rowing is that it's simple. Take one stroke as hard as you can. Repeat. We do that on Lake Michie every day. We can do that here.
