DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University men's soccer head coach John Kerr has announced the addition of Chris Rich to the staff as an assistant coach. Rich will work closely with the goalkeepers as well as handling various scouting and recruiting duties.
“We are ecstatic to welcome Chris Rich to our Duke soccer family,” said Kerr. “Chris has extensive experience coaching at the collegiate level at his alma mater Barry University, Florida International as well as two previous ACC teams.”
"I would like to thank Coach Kerr, Dr. Chris Kennedy and Duke University for this tremendous opportunity,” said Rich. “It's truly an honor to join the Duke soccer family and this prestigious university. I look forward to getting started and helping the program achieve a great deal of success in the near future."
Rich, a 2007 graduate of Barry University, comes to Duke after serving as a volunteer assistant coach at North Carolina for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. He also has established local contacts as the head coach for local club Triangle United.
“He has also been very successful coaching at the youth level locally at Triangle United,” Kerr said. “He brings a focus on training the goalkeepers in the Duke program along with a concentration as our recruiting coordinator. He brings a wealth of knowledge, passion and energy to the program with a great reputation and work ethic. Chris will be a great addition to our coaching staff.”
During his two seasons in Chapel Hill, Rich helped lead the Tar Heels to a 30-7-5 record in the two seasons and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. North Carolina's defense was among the top in the league in 2014, allowing just 0.73 goals per game. In 2015, goalkeeper James Pyle ranked second in the ACC and ninth nationally with an impressive .839 save percentage.
Prior to moving to the Triangle, Rich oversaw game day scouting and video analysis for the Hokies during the 2012 and 2013 campaigns. He also served as the goalkeeper coach, mentoring first team All-ACC keeper Kyle Renfro in 2013. Renfro, under Rich's watch, led the ACC in saves in both seasons and was third and fourth in the league in save percentage those year years, respectively.
Previous to his two seasons in Blacksburg, Rich worked as an assistant coach at Florida International University for the 2011 season. He assisted in most aspects of the program with a specific focus on domestic recruiting.
After graduating from Barry in 2007, Rich spent four years as an assistant coach at his alma mater. He served as the goalkeeper coach for the men's team for four seasons and the women's team for three seasons.
As a student-athlete at Barry, Rich was a captain and a four-year starter in goal for the Buccaneers. An All-Sunshine State Conference pick, Rich notched 28 career wins and eight shutouts during his four seasons. For his career overall, Rich started 48 games for the Buccaneers.
Rich holds a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, a USSF 'B' license, and a NSCAA Advanced National Goalkeeping Diploma.
Rich earned a bachelor's degree in sport management in 2007 and a master's degree in sport management in 2009 from Barry.
