STILLWATER, Okla. – The Duke men's golf team finished the second day of the NCAA Stillwater Regional in a tie for 12th place.
The Blue Devils shot 310 (+22) on Tuesday, an 11-shot improvement from Monday's round, and have a team total of 631 (+55) through 36 holes of play. Oklahoma State, the tournament host, leads the tournament with an even-par total of 576.
“Our guys put up some red numbers on the card today on a challenging golf course in demanding conditions, and that was no small task,” Duke head coach Jamie Green said. “Finishing on the front nine with the wind whipping in our faces we didn't quite make as many pars as we'd have liked, but their body language was strong and they showed determination for the entire round. The guys had their eyes up, chests out and shoulders relaxed. Body language and deciding to stay upbeat, optimistic and accepting doesn't always get the credit it deserves. But our players know that staying dialed into those vital components during the entire round are the major keys to success and what will allow each one of them to enjoy a terrific round tomorrow. We have five guys that have every ability necessary to wear this golf course down tomorrow, one shot at a time.”
Freshman Alex Smalley is the top Duke player on the individual leader board with a total of 153 (+9), good for a tie for 24th place. Smalley shot 79 (+7) on Tuesday, making a team-high three birdies on the day.
Sophomore Jake Shuman had the best second-round score by a Duke player, carding a three-over 75 to move into a tie for 40th place. He has a 36-hole total of 157 (+13). Shuman had a steady hand in the second round, producing 13 pars and playing Duke's back nine (the front nine of the course) at just one shot over par.
Junior Matt Oshrine is tied for 47th with a total of 160 (+16), while sophomore Adam Wood is tied for 53rd with a score of 161 (+17). Junior Max Greyserman rounds out the Duke lineup in a tie for 60th place with a total of 164 (+20).
“I've been a part of and seen some wild final rounds, and I've seen some things that nobody thought would happen,” Green said. “We have five guys who can each post a red number out here and do something special. Their self belief and self confidence will be what catapults them forward. ”
Third-round play will get under way at 8:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday. The top five teams and the top individual on a non-advancing team earn a spot in the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
“There will be absolutely zero give-up in these guys tomorrow,” Green said. “I know them and they know themselves. Through the last shot, whether they hole out from the fairway or sink a putt, our guys will give it everything they have.”
