PHILADELPHIA – Kicking off the final weekend of the 2016 outdoor regular season Thursday with the opening day of the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, the Duke track & field team captured one event victory and qualified one relay for Saturday's finals.
Continuing what has been a stellar month and season, senior pole vaulter Megan Clark edged out sophomore teammate Madison Heath for the win in the College Women's Pole Vault Championship, clearing 13-9.25 (4.20m) and electing to end her day on the make. Heath failed to clear the same height, placing second with a mark of 13-5.25 (4.10m).
Duke picked up additional top-10 placings in the rest of Thursday's field events, sparked by redshirt junior Urina Harrell placing third in the Women's Shot Put College event with a throw of 47-6.25 (14.48m). In the Women's High Jump College division, senior Maddie Morrow used a leap of 5-5.75 (1.67m) to tie for sixth, while junior Amarie Bremel placed ninth in the Women's Discus Throw College competition with a distance of 147-10 (45.07m). Competing in the College Women's Hammer Throw Championship, freshman Stefani Vukajlovic picked up a 10th-place showing with a throw of 164-2 (50.05m).
On the track, the relay team of Teddi Maslowski, Madeline Kopp, MacKenzie Kerr and Maddy Price combined for the second-fastest preliminary time in the College Women's 4x400's 81-team field, advancing to Saturday's final with a time of 3:37.23.
The Blue Devils also fielded a team in the College Women's Distance Medley Championship of America Invitational, with Liz Lansing, India Lowe, Kim Hallowes and Madison Granger combining for an 11:32.10 to finish sixth overall. Lansing clocked a 3:36.14 over the first 1,200 meters before Lowe covered the next 400 in 57.08. Lowe handed off to Hallowes, who registered an 800-meter split of 2:10.51, followed by Granger anchoring with a 4:48.37 1,600-meter leg.
Rounding out the events with the individual races, graduate student Shaun Thompson, competing in his first 5,000 of the year, placed fifth overall in the College Men's 5,000 Championship with a 14:04.08 performance. In the College Women's 5,000 Championship, rookie Sheridan Wilbur crossed the line in 13th with a time of 16:49.28, a personal best for the freshman.
Running the steeplechase, senior Olivia Anderson captured 16th in the College Women's 3,000-Meter Steeplechase Championship, stopping the clock at 10:51.53, while sophomore Kyle Carrozza used a time of 9:31.57 to finish 30th in the College Men's 3,000-Meter Steeplechase Championship.
Duke will return to Franklin Field for the second day of the Penn Relays Friday. Action will begin with both track and field events starting at 9 a.m.
