NEW LONDON, N.C. – The No. 20 Duke men's golf team finished the first day of the 2016 ACC Championship in red numbers, shooting 287 (-1) at the Old North State Club to wrap up Friday's action in a tie for third place.
The Blue Devils are one of five teams at one-under after 18 holes, alongside Florida State, Virginia, Georgia Tech and Louisville. Clemson leads the tournament with a score of 273 (-15), while Wake Forest sits in second place with a total of 277 (-11).
“We got off to a good start today, then had to battle in the middle of the round and played well at the end, which really mirrors the way this golf course is set up,” Duke head coach Jamie Green said. “It was really raining out there, but we were able to get into a good frame of mind at the beginning of the round.”
Duke was led on Friday by sophomore Jake Shuman, who shot a three-under 69 out of the No. 5 position to finish the day in a tie for fifth place. He got off to a hot start with birdies on his first two holes and played the front nine at one-under. After making the turn, Shuman added three more birdies and just one bogey to post a round in the 60s for the fifth time this season.
Shuman, who has turned in top-five finishes in each of his last two tournaments, is just three shots off the pace set by Wake Forest's Paul McBride heading into the second round.
“Jake wasn't scrambling today and that's because he did everything solidly,” Green said. “He drove the ball especially well. Over the last few weeks, Jake has been calm and confident. He's in a comfortable rhythm right now. When you combine that rhythm with an optimistic and assertive frame of mind, it leads to some really good golf.”
Junior Matt Oshrine bounced back from a tough ending to his front nine, in which he bogeyed holes seven through nine, to birdie holes 10, 11 and 13 and finish the day with an even-par 72. He is tied for 18th place after the first round.
Sophomore Adam Wood and freshman Alex Smalley each used clutch late-round birdies to finish in a tie for 24th with totals of 73 (+1), while junior Max Greyserman shot 76 (+4) to finish the first round in a tie for 47th.
“There are a lot of good teams in this conference and no team is out of it,” Green said. “Overall, we played with a sense of comfort today and the guys didn't panic over anything. There was some disappointment today, but we know it's a 54-hole marathon. We have two more days to make a run at the championship.”
Duke will get its second round under way at 10:30 a.m. ET on Saturday and will be playing with Georgia Tech and Virginia.
The ACC Championship will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app beginning at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday and 1 p.m. ET on Sunday. Live scoring is available via golfstatresults.com. There is no charge for admission to the ACC Championship.
