ATHENS, Ga. – Duke University freshman
Virginia Elena Carta fired a one-under-par, 71, Friday to kick off stroke play qualifying at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the 6,307-yard, par 72 University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
As a team, Duke placed tied ninth and will be placed in the “Black” bracket for match play Saturday and Sunday. The Blue Devils, who are playing without the third-ranked golfer in the nation,
Leona Maguire, turned in a 14-over, 302.
UCLA shot a two-under-par, 286, and host Georgia fired a 288 to pace the field, while Alabama (289), Southern California (292), Denver (295), Northwestern (294), Purdue (297), Kent State (297), Duke (302), Arkansas (302), Auburn (303) and Oregon State (311) rounded out the field.
Duke, Arkansas, Auburn and Oregon State will see action in the “Black” bracket with action kicking off Saturday morning. The Blue Devils are set to face Oregon State Saturday morning, Auburn Saturday afternoon and Arkansas Sunday morning.
Carta, who hails from Udine, Italy, equaled her best first round of the season with one-under, 71, which placed tied fourth. Louise Riderstrom of UCLA turned in a four-under-par, 68, to win stroke play qualifying.
After totaling three straight pars to open the day, Carta suffered a bogey on No. 8. Following a birdie on No. 10 to get back to even par she had a bogey on No. 14. The rookie went on to play the final eight holes at two-under-par with birdies on No. 15 and No. 1. Carta hit 16 greens, 13 fairways and had 32 putts.
After turning in a 75 Friday, junior
Sandy Choi placed tied 29th. Choi, who is from Seoul, South Korea, opened with one of two birdies of the day on No. 5, but suffered back-to-back bogeys on No. 8 and No. 9 to drop back to one-over. Choi moved to even par with a birdie on No. 13, but closed the round with three bogeys and six pars to finish with a 75. She hit 13 greens, 12 fairways and had 34 putts.
Gurbani Singh turned in a 77, which was tied 46th, after collecting one birdie on No. 9. A product of New Delhi, India, Singh had three bogeys on holes 1-9 and two on the back, after starting the day on hole six. She hit 12 greens, 11 fairways and had 33 putts.
Both
Celine Boutier and
Lisa Maguire carded rounds of 79 and are tied 54th overall.
