ATHENS, Ga. – With match play starting Saturday at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, the Duke women's golf team downed Oregon State and Auburn as part of the “Black” bracket at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, which is being played at the 6,307-yard, par 72 University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
Sophomore
Gurbani Singh got things started quickly for the Blue Devils against Oregon State Saturday morning as she won her first four holes to take a 4-up advantage on Hannah Swanson. After Swanson won holes No. 6 and No. 8 to cut Singh's advantage to 2-up, Singh won holes 11-14 to close with a 6&4 victory.
Duke senior
Celine Boutier won hole No. 2 and never trailed during the match. Boutier, who hails from Montrouge, France, held either a 1-up or 2-up lead over the first 12 holes against Ashlee Pickerell. With a par on No. 13, Boutier went ahead 3-up with five holes remaining. She closed with a 3&2 win, after totaling a par on No. 16.
Freshman
Virginia Elena Carta went 1-down after three holes and could never slow down Oregon State's Olivia Benzin falling, 3&2.
After falling behind 1-down through three holes to Haley Nist, Blue Devil sophomore
Lisa Maguire won hole No. 4 with a par to get the score back to all square. Maguire, who is from Cavan, Ireland, fell behind again after nine holes as Nist registered her first birdie of the day. Maguire went 2-down through 10 holes, but came back to win holes No. 11 and No. 13 with birdies to get back to all square.
Maguire then won holes 15, 16 and 17 to claim a 3&1 win.
Blue Devil junior
Sandy Choi fell 2-down through three holes but battled all day. Choi, who is from Seoul, South Korea, birdied holes No. 12 and No. 13 to go from being 1-down to 1-up with five holes left. Back-to-back bogeys by Choi dropped her to 1-down, but she came back to win hole 17 and finished all-square.
Duke claimed a 3-1-1 victory to open match play against Oregon State.
The Blue Devils jumped out to early leads in four of the five matches against Auburn in the afternoon and would go on to cruise to a 5-0-0 victory.
After falling in the morning match, Carta won the first hole against Kelli Murphy and never looked back. Carta, a native of Udine, Italy, went on to win holes 9-11 and closed the match with a 4-up win after 14 holes as Duke had clinched the victory.
Maguire also got off to a solid start by winning the second hole and would never trail the rest of the way against Mai Dechathipat. After totaling eight straight pars to kick off her round, she rolled in a birdie on No. 9 and led 4-up.
After Michaela Owen bogeyed the first two holes, Singh jumped out to a 1-up lead through two holes. Singh led by as many as 2-up, but Owen birdied No. 9 and Singh suffered a bogey on No. 11 to get the match to all square. Singh responded with a birdie on No. 12 and would never trail the rest of the way winning 1-up.
Choi trailed for most of the first 11 holes against Jamie Yun, but collected her first birdie of the day on No. 12 to get the match to all square. With wins on No. 16 and No. 17, Choi won 2&1.
Looking for her second straight win on the day, Boutier totaled pars on holes one and three and led 2-up early. Boutier notched pars on her first eight holes and led 4-up versus Alex Harrell. With 14 pars and one birdie over 17 holes, Boutier won 2&1.
Duke will take on Arkansas Sunday in the final match play contest of the weekend.
