DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men will send a relay to the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships for a second-straight year, as announced Wednesday by the NCAA. In addition, junior Peter Kropp will represent the Blue Devils individually for the second consecutive season, garnering an official invitation in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Duke's record holder in the 100 breaststroke, Kropp surpassed the NCAA automatic qualification standard in the event during the fall at the Nike Cup Invitational. He posted a time of 52.13, which seeds him eighth out of 29 invited swimmers on the NCAA psych sheet. Kropp was 19th in the 100 breaststroke preliminaries at last year's NCAA meet and reached the championship final in the event for a third-straight year at last month's ACC Championship.
Kropp is also eligible to swim in the 200 breaststroke with an NCAA 'B' cut of 1:57.75.
Kropp and 200 medley relay teammates Kaz Takabayashi, David Armstrong and James Peek secured their second consecutive trip to NCAAs with an 'A' cut of 1:25.00 at ACCs. That mark placed the group fourth in the conference while breaking their own previous school record of 1:25.03. The 1:25.00 entry time ranks the Blue Devils 15th on the NCAA psych sheet.
Takabayashi, Kropp, Armstrong and Peek made history last season, earning the program's first NCAA 'A' cut in a relay event since the 'A' and 'B' standards were implemented. The group went on to reach the consolation final at the 2015 NCAA Championships.
The same group posted a 'B' cut of 3:09.20 in the 400 medley relay at this year's Nike Cup Invitational.
Peek was listed as the third individual alternate for the NCAA Championship with a 'B' cut of 19.54 in the 50 freestyle.
The group of swimmers will be joined in Atlanta by freshman diver Evan Moretti, who qualified to compete on the 3-meter springboard. Moretti earned a top-10 finish in the event at this week's NCAA Zone B Diving Championships to become the first Blue Devil diver to advance to NCAAs since Nick McCrory in 2014.
The 2016 NCAA Championships are slated for March 23-26 at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center. Trials for the 100 breaststroke and 200 medley relay are both scheduled for Friday, March 25. All preliminaries sessions will begin at 10 a.m., followed by finals each evening at 6 p.m.
ESPN3 will stream live finals sessions Friday and Saturday. Live results for the championship will be available on NCAA.com.
