HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Duke University junior Sandy Choi capped the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate with her best finish of the season at tied second overall, while the second-ranked Blue Devils closed strong Sunday at the 6,208-yard, par 71 Pete Dye Course at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
Choi, a native of Seoul, South Korea, posted rounds of 71, 70 and 73 over the 54 holes to finish only two shots off the individual winner, Cheyenne Knight of Alabama (213). Choi was one of four golfers who placed tied second with a 214.
Once again starting on hole 10, Choi suffered a bogey on the first hole, but settled down to play her next nine holes at one-under-par. She rolled in a birdie on the 384-yard, par four 16th. Choi had back-to-back bogies on the second and third holes, before closing with four pars, a birdie on No. 5 and a bogey on No. 9. She hit 12 fairways, 13 greens and had 33 putts on the day.
After struggling with a 15-over-par, 299, on day one, Duke was the best team in the field over the final 36 holes as the Blue Devils shot only 11-over-par on Saturday and Sunday. Duke turned in rounds of 289 and 290 over the final two days to finish with an 878.
“We put a couple good days together,” said Duke head coach Dan Brooks. “But those two days weren't our best golf, and day one certainly wasn't. We'll be in better shape next time around.”
Alabama went wire-to-wire to win the team title with an 868, while Virginia (875), Duke (878), Oklahoma State (879), North Carolina (881), Arkansas (882), Georgia (883), Southern California (887), South Carolina (887) and Tennessee (888) closed the top 10.
Sophomore Leona Maguire turned in a 73 Sunday to move up to tied 17th overall for the weekend with a seven-over, 220. Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, had a rough start with a double-bogey on No. 11 and then a bogey on No. 14. She responded with birdies on No. 15 and No. 18 to make the turn at one-over-par, 36. Maguire collected bogeys on the first and fifth holes on the way in before rolling in a birdie on the 153-yard, par three eighth. For the day, she hit 10 fairways, 13 greens and 31 putts.
Turning in Duke's best round of the day the lone senior on the trip, Celine Boutier. Boutier, who is from Montrouge, France, fired a one-under, 70, to move her into a tie for 45th overall with a 226. She collected four straight pars to open her round, before registering a bogey on No. 5. Boutier sank her first of three birdies on the day on the 384-yard, par four 16th and had another bogey on No. 17 to make the turn with a one-over, 36. Boutier once again started the nine with four consecutive pars and then rolled in a 30-footer for birdie on the fifth to get to even par. She added another birdie on No. 8 to finish with the under-par ledger. Boutier hit a team-high 14 greens, eight fairways and had 34 putts in the final round.
Sophomore Gurbani Singh improved her scores each day during the tournament going from a 77 to a 75 and finishing with a three-over, 74. A product of New Delhi, India, Singh tied for 45th overall with a 226. She overcame a challenging start with three bogeys over her first four holes, but played her final 14 holes at even par with three birdies, three bogeys and eight pars. Singh registered birdies on the 15th, fourth and fifth holes. She hit 12 greens, 11 fairways and had 34 putts on the day.
A day after turning in a one-over, 72, freshman Virginia Elena Carta carded a 78 and dropped to tied 55th for the tournament (228). She totaled rounds of 78, 72 and 78 over the three days of play. In Sunday's final round, Carta was limited to without a birdie and suffered two double-bogeys to hurt her score.
The Blue Devils turned in 11 birdies on the final day after collecting a total of 15 the first two days combined.
Duke will next compete in the LSU Tiger Golf Classic March 20-22 in Baton Rouge, La.
