BATON ROUGE, La. – Duke University senior
Celine Boutier carded a season-best five-under-par, 67, and the second-ranked Blue Devils jumped out to a six-stroke lead after 18 holes at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic, which is being played at the 6,237-yard, par 72 University Club in Baton Rouge, La.
The five-under, 67, by Boutier tied the University Club women's collegiate record since the course renovation in 2010. She shares the record with Kelley Walsh of Georgia, who shot a 67 in the second round of the 2013 classic.
Boutier, a product of Montrouge, France, accomplished her five-under ledger in very challenging conditions as winds were gusting at 30 miles per hour all day. She holds a five-stroke lead over Blakesly Warren of Tennessee, Ji Eun Balik of Mississippi State and Kayla Thompson of UNC Wilmington with an even-par, 72.
Registering a bogey-free round of 67 Sunday, Boutier got started quickly with a 20-foot birdie putt on No. 1 and a birdie on No. 3 to move to two-under. She then rolled in a 24-foot birdie on the 153-yard, par three eighth hole to get to three-under-par. Boutier registered six straight pars, before holing 10-foot birdie putts on No. 15 and No. 17 to finish at five-under. She hit 13 greens, 12 fairways and a season-best 27 putts.
As a team, Duke carded a five-over, 293, to open a six-stroke lead over Arkansas (299). Tennessee (302), Tulane (305), LSU (305), Houston (307), Mississippi State (307), Kentucky (307), UNC Wilmington (310), Wake Forest (311) and NC State (311) rounded out the top 10.
Leona Maguire, a sophomore from Cavan, Ireland, opened her day with back-to-back birdies on No. 2 and No. 3 to move to two-under-par. She suffered a bogey on the 137-yard, par three fifth and another bogey on No. 10 to drop back to even par. Maguire suffered a triple-bogey on the par five 11th, before closing with four pars, a birdie on No. 14 and a bogey on No. 16. She hit 12 greens, 13 fairways and had 32 putts, while finishing with a three-over, 75, to tie for 11th.
Rookie
Virginia Elena Carta struggled out of the gate with a par on No. 1 followed by three consecutive bogeys on holes 2-4. She added back-to-back bogeys on No. 9 and No. 10 to drop to five-over for the day. After adding her first birdie on the 448-yard, par four 14th, Carta drove the 327-yard, par four 15th green and just missed an eagle putt. She settled with her second straight birdie, while closing with three pars to finish with a 75.
Gurbani Singh, a product of New Delhi, India, had an eventful first nine as she collected only one par on No. 8. She birdied No. 1, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 to get to two-under-par, but had bogeys on No. 2, No. 4, No. 7 and No. 9 on her way to making the turn at even par. Singh played the final nine at four-over-par finishing with a 76, which was tied for 20th.
After finishing as Duke's top finisher in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, junior
Sandy Choi was held without a birdie in the first round as she carded a six-over, 78, and is tied 35th. She hit 11 greens, 13 fairways and had 34 putts.
Duke collected a total of 14 birdies on the day.
The Blue Devils will tee off in the second round starting at 11 a.m. (ET) along with Arkansas and Tennessee. Live scoring will be available via www.GolfStat.com.
