ATLANTA – The Duke men's swimming and diving team concluded competition at the 2016 Men's NCAA Championships Saturday at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center.
A day after garnering honorable mention All-America honors as members of the Blue Devils' 200-yard medley relay, juniors James Peek and Peter Kropp represented the program in individual events.
Peek took to the water first in the 100 freestyle preliminaries, touching at 44.22 for 46th place.
Kropp followed with a season-best time in the 200 breaststroke before being disqualified.
Peek and Kropp were joined by junior Kaz Takabayashi and senior David Armstrong on the Blue Devils' 200 medley relay, which became the first in program history to earn All-America honors of any kind. The group placed sixth in the consolation final and 14th overall with a time of 1:25.32.
Freshman diver Evan Moretti added points for the Duke men, impressing in his first NCAA Championships appearance. The Scarsdale, N.Y., native advanced to the 3-meter springboard consolation final with a career-best award of 377.55 points in the preliminary round, and closed out the event in 16th to also claim honorable mention All-America accolades.
“This has been really a great season, a lot of great accomplishments throughout the year,” said head coach Dan Colella. “To finish up with them leaving the pool as All-Americans is absolutely terrific and we couldn't be more proud of them. Evan, to come out of Zones as the 10th qualifier and come to NCAAs and score – he's had an incredible year.”
The Blue Devil men finished 39th in the final team standings with seven points after being represented at the NCAA meet for the seventh consecutive season and 14th time overall.
“It's been a really great year for Duke swimming and diving,” Colella said. “We're at a pivotal point where we have a lot of folks returning. We're very grateful for everything the seniors have done for the program over the last four years. We have a great group of freshmen joining us next year, and we're just looking to continue building on the successes of this season.”
