RALEIGH, N.C. – The Duke track & field program kicked off the 2016 outdoor season in stellar fashion Friday at the Raleigh Relays, highlighted by one school record falling and a slew of others breaking into the all-time Duke top-five list.
Running the first 100-meter dash of her collegiate career, sophomore sprinter Maddy Price wasted no time adding her name to the Duke records book. Price clocked a preliminary time of 11.65, easily securing her a spot in tomorrow's final and setting the school record in the event, besting recent graduate Lauren Hansson's time of 11.83 by nearly two-tenths of a second. Also competing in the women's 100 prelims, junior Madeline Kopp placed 11th overall with an 11.90 showing to just miss qualifying for finals.
Also making a debut on the track, graduate student Shaun Thompson, returning to the track for the first time since the 2015 indoor season after redshirting both the 2015 outdoor and 2016 indoor campaigns, ran the first 10,000 of his collegiate outdoor track & field career. In impressive fashion, Thompson clocked a 29:02.18, the second-fastest time in Duke history, to place second in his heat by less than a second behind Kentucky's Jacob Thomson. Looking at the national leaderboard heading into the weekend, Thomson and Thompson's times would rank first and second, respectively, among NCAA Division I runners. Through two sections and the third and final section set to run Saturday morning, Thompson's time currently puts him in second place.
Elsewhere in the men's distance races, junior Alec Kunzweiler led a pack of Blue Devils in the 1,500, stopping the clock at a career-best 3:48.20, and sophomore Kyle Carrozza captured 14th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal-best time of 9:22.20.
In addition to Price, Maslowski advanced to Saturday's final in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 13.74 for the third-best prelim time among the field. Maslowski owns the Duke program record in the event after clocking a 13.38 last spring. Junior Chaz Hawkins led a Blue Devil quartet in the men's 400 to round out the sprints, placing 17th overall in a large field with a personal-best time of 48.20.
Capping the individual races, the women's distance squad was led by freshmen in both races, as Sheridan Wilbur finished 23rd overall in the 5,000 with a time of 16:55.56 and Liz Lansing ran a 4:35.14 in the 1,500 to take 37th.
In the lone relay event of the day, the men's sprint medley relay team of Hawkins, freshman Brett Bofinger, senior Matthew Rodio and junior Michael Wilson combined to clock a 3:28.96 to place fifth.
Leading the field events, the Blue Devils swept the top two spots in the men's high jump college division as sophomore Colt Sessions logged Duke's lone event win of the day, winning the competition with a clearance of 6-9.00 (2.06m). Fellow sophomore Andrew Pancoast finished right behind Sessions, taking second with a jump of 6-8.00 (2.03m). Competing in the men's high jump invitational, senior Carl Heinz tied for fifth with a successful height of 6-6.75 (2.00m).
In the throwing events, the Blue Devils logged three top-five performances, including two top-three showings from redshirt senior Stephen Boals. Starting things off, Boals took third in the men's discus with a throw of 168-10 (51.46m), then encored that performance by taking second in the shot put with a mark of 57-5.50 (17.51m).
For the women, redshirt junior Urina Harrell registered a fourth-place finish in the shot put, tossing the implement 49-4.50 (15.05m), the second-best distance in school history. Junior Amarie Bremel just missed on a top-five showing in the discus by placing sixth with a mark of 153-6 (46.78m).
Rounding out the field events, junior Connor Hall finished fourth overall in the men's pole vault invitational, clearing 15-9.00 (4.80m). Sophomore Jordan Hatfield, competing in the men's pole vault college event, took second with a vault of 15-1.00 (4.60m).
The second and final day of the Raleigh Relays will resume tomorrow morning, starting at 10 a.m. with both running and field events. The ESPN3 broadcast of the meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
