DURHAM, N.C.—Air Force sophomore attackman Chris Walsch finished a fastbreak goal with 10 seconds left in overtime to lift the No. 20 Falcons over ninth-ranked Duke in non-conference men's lacrosse action this evening at Koskinen Stadium. Nick Hruby assisted on the winning goal.
Duke falls to 6-4 overall and suffered its first overtime loss since 2010, while Air Force (7-2) pushes its win streak to seven games. Chad Cohan paced Duke's offense with three goals and an assist, while Walsch had three goals and four assists for the Falcons.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and extended their advantage to 8-3 at the 5:10 mark of the third quarter before Air Force mounted a furious comeback. The Falcons scored six unanswered goals over a span of just 7:47 to grab their first lead of the game with 10:42 left in the fourth quarter.
Trailing 9-8 with Air Force on a 6-0 run, Duke's defense stepped up and forced a turnover to give the Blue Devils' offense a chance to tie the score with nine minutes to play. Falcons goaltender Doug Gouchoe made one of his 17 saves on the night to stop Justin Guterding on the doorstep.
Duke goaltender Danny Fowler returned the favor to Air Force on the next possession to give the Blue Devils the ball back on offense. After a Jack Bruckner shot sailed wide, Case Matheis found Deemer Class on the restart for the rifle to the right corner to tie the game.
Neither team was able to score in the final six minutes. Air Force killed two slashing penalties in the final five minutes to keep the Blue Devils at bay, while Fowler came up with another big save to keep Duke alive.
After yet another Gouchoe save resulted in a clear for Air Force, Duke rookie Brad Smith made an incredible defensive effort to force a turnover and give the ball back to the Blue Devils with 90 seconds left.
Duke called a timeout with 27 seconds to go to set up a final shot. Guterding got a good look at the goal, but hit the right pipe to force overtime.
The Blue Devils one the faceoff in the extra session, but wasn't able to keep possession. Fowler stopped another point-blank shot, but Air Force drew a pushing penalty to go man-up for 30 seconds with 2:14 to play. The Blue Devils' man-down team forced the turnover and cleared yet again, but Duke couldn't execute as another turnover resulted in the game-winner for the Falcons as Hruby found Walsch on the 3-on-1 fastbreak.
Kyle Rowe was outstanding again at the X, winning 16-of-21 faceoff and picking up 13 ground balls. Fowler finished with eight saves.
Duke opens ACC play Saturday, March 26 with No. 5 Syracuse. Faceoff is set for 12 p.m., on ESPNU.
