LELAND, N.C. – The No. 20 Duke men's golf team secured its first victory of the season on Monday when it shot 289 (+1) to win the Cape Fear National Intercollegiate by 14 strokes.
The Blue Devils finished the two-day event with a total of 857 (-7), running away from the field as all five members of the scoring team finished in the top 10 on the individual leader board. Duke entered the day 14 shots clear of the field and maintained that lead over the last 18 holes of play.
“We had a big lead heading into the day, but these guys aren't complacent,” Duke head coach Jamie Green said. “The hole locations were challenging today, and I commend our guys for being smart and making good decisions from tee to green. It's fun to play solidly on a good golf course.”
Sophomore Adam Wood broke par for the second time in the event on Monday, shooting 71 to bring his total to 213 (-3) and move into a tie for third on the final leader board. The performance, which featured 15 pars and two birdies in the final round, was Wood's third top-five finish of the season.
Junior Max Greyserman earned his first top-five finish of the season, and second of his career, after shooting an even-par 72 on Monday. His 54-hole total of 214 (-2) was good for sole possession of fifth place. Classmate Alexander Matlari shot his second consecutive 73 (+1) on Monday and finished the event in sixth place with an even-par total of 216.
Freshman Alex Smalley tied for seventh place, the second top-10 showing of his career, with a total of 217 (+1), while sophomore Jake Shuman wrapped up play in a tie for ninth with a total of 218 (+2).
“The thing we did best was keep the ball in play off the tee,” Green said. “That really helped guys make birdies, but it also helped them wear the golf course out with pars. The guys were pushing each other and they were all making wise decisions on the golf course, so it was a good team effort.”
Junior Matt Oshrine, playing as an individual, was the highest-finishing member of the Duke team at Cape Fear National. Oshrine finished in second place with a total of 210 (-6), just two shots out of the individual medal. The performance was his first top-five finish at Duke and featured all three rounds at par or better, as he shot 72 (E) and 69 (-3) on Sunday before posting another 69 (-3) on Monday.
Also playing as individuals, junior Andrew Bieber tied for 47th with a total of 233 (+17), and sophomore Ben Silverman and freshman Shrish Dwivedi shared 58th place with totals of 236 (+20).
“In college golf, it's rare to have your entire team here to enjoy a moment like this,” Green said. “A win like this can help grow your confidence, and we're going to enjoy the moment. We have another tournament at the end of spring break, and it would be nice to get another win. We didn't play spectacular golf, but we're a deep team and we played solid all tournament. There's always room for improvement, and that's an exciting part of this performance.”
Duke will return to action on Sunday, March 20, when it opens play at the Seahawk Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
