DURHAM, N.C. – A mix of strong play in doubles and singles by the Blue Devils highlighted day two of the Kitty Harrison Invitational, held at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C.
Two Duke doubles pairs posted victories to kick start the action on Saturday. Senior Chalena Scholl and sophomore Kaitlyn McCarthy picked up their second doubles win of the weekend, downing William & Mary's Ekaterina Stepanova and Olivia Thaler, 8-3. Senior Alyssa Smith and junior Rebecca Smaller also earned their second victory of the weekend while competing as a doubles tandem, dropping William & Mary's Rosie Cheng and Maria Groener, 8-6.
Members of the Blue Devil squad returned to the courts later in the morning to face singles competitors from Penn State. Scholl and Smith each picked up a victory to remain undefeated in singles action during the event. Scholl downed Katia Blik in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, while Smith defeated Devan McCluskey, 6-2, 6-2.
Smaller and redshirt sophomore Christina Makarova each suffered their first singles loss of the weekend, with Smaller dropping a 6-4, 7-5 decision to Samantha Smith and Makarova falling to Shannon Hanley, 6-3, 0-6, 1-0.
The final day of the Kitty Harrison Invitational begins at 9 a.m., with the Blue Devils facing Iowa in singles competition.
