PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Four members of the Duke women's tennis team participated in the singles and doubles qualifying draws of the 2016 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Tuesday, with the tandem of senior Chalena Scholl and sophomore Kaitlyn McCarthy advancing to the next round of doubles play in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The duo of Scholl and McCarthy, ranked 55th in the preseason poll and competing together for the first time this season, registered an 8-3 win over Texas Tech's Gabriela Talaba and Alex Valenstein to open the doubles qualifying draw. With the victory, the Duke pair will face USC's 33rd-ranked team of Zoe Katz and Gabby Smith Wednesday at 1 p.m. (ET).
The 39th-ranked doubles team of sophomore Ellyse Hamlin and freshman Meible Chi dropped its opening round match to Denver's Julia O'Loughlin and Maureen Slattery, 8-5, bringing the pair's record to 1-3 this season. With the loss, Hamlin and Chi fall to the qualifying consolation bracket, where they will face San Jose State's 47th-ranked pair of Sybille Gauvain and Marie Klocker tomorrow at 4 p.m. (ET).
Chi continued her hot streak in singles play Tuesday. After winning three straight matches to advance out of the prequalifying draw, Chi opened the qualifying draw with a straight set, 6-1, 6-1 win over Penn's Kana Daniel. Chi resumed competition later in the day and suffered her first loss of the season after 55th-ranked Ingrid Gamarra Martins of South Carolina earned the 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 win. Chi owns a team-best 7-1 record this fall.
After dropping her first set to TCU's 57th-ranked Donika Bashota, Scholl, ranked 40th in the preseason poll, opened singles play Tuesday by rallying for the victory. The Pompano Beach, Fla., native earned the 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win to face 59th-ranked Gabriela Knutson of Syracuse. During her second singles match of the day, Scholl fell in three sets to Knutson, 1-6, 6-4, 6-0. Scholl's record moved to 3-2 with Tuesday's results.
McCarthy, the 34th-ranked singles player in the country, competed in her first singles match of the 2016 fall season and defeated her opponent, Ole Miss' 81st-ranked Tea Jandric, in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. The Cary, N.C., native returned to singles action and dropped her match against Pepperdine's 48th-ranked Mayar Sherif Ahmed, 6-4, 7-5.
