PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -- Duke's run at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships came to a close Wednesday after the doubles pair of senior Chalena Scholl and sophomore Kaitlyn McCarthy suffered a setback in the second round of the qualifying doubles draw.
Scholl and McCarthy, the 55th-ranked doubles team in the country, fell to the 33rd-ranked tandem of Zoe Katz and Gabby Smith of USC, 8-3, marking the first loss of the season for the Blue Devil duo. Scholl and McCarthy had advanced to the second round of the qualifying doubles draw by downing Texas Tech's 42nd-ranked team of Alex Valenstein and Gabriela Talaba, 8-3, one day earlier.
In addition to Scholl and McCarthy, the doubles pair of sophomore Ellyse Hamlin and freshman Meible Chi, the 39th-ranked doubles team in the nation, faced San Jose State's 47th-ranked duo of Sybille Gauvain and Marie Klocker in a qualifying doubles backdraw match and earned the 8-6 victory. With the result, Hamlin and Chi improved to 2-2 on the year.
