
Duke Goes 3-0 in Singles on Friday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis team began the Charlotte 49ers Fall Invitational with a 3-0 singles mark and 2-2 doubles record. All three Blue Devils who took part in singles advanced to the quarterfinals and both doubles teams will play in the consolation finals Saturday.
Leading the way in singles was freshman Spencer Furman, who made his singles debut on Friday with a 6-0, 7-6 (2) victory against Ricky Saad of Davidson. Furman, the No. 1 seed in the A1 flight, will face Wood Benton of South Carolina at 10 a.m. Saturday in the quarterfinals.
In the A2 flight, freshman Nick Stachowiak was the top seed and moved to the quarterfinals when Troy's Hassan Ndayishimiye retired with Stachowiak leading 4-3 in the opening set. Stachowiak will face Jack Maddocks of Appalachian State in the quarterfinals at 10:15 a.m. Saturday. Stachowiak improved his team-best fall record to 9-3 in singles.
Rounding out the singles action was sophomore Ryan Dickerson, who recorded a 6-2, 6-2 victory versus Andy Lau of Troy. The No. 3 seed in the A2 flight, Dickerson takes on Wofford's Haris Poric in the quarterfinals at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Dickerson upped his fall mark to 4-2, with three wins in his last four matches.
Stachowiak and sophomore Jason Lapidus, playing together for the first time, were the No. 1 seed in the A1 doubles flight and fell 6-2 to Clemson's Robert Dudley and Arturo Pinazo in the opening round. The Duke duo bounced back with a 6-4 triumph versus Wofford's Poric and Julian Chousa. Stachowiak and Lapidus will face Charlotte's pair of Carl Solik and Francis Pare in the consolation championship at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Furman and Dickerson were the top seed in the A1 doubles flight and were also upset, falling 7-6 (2) to Pablo Moreno and Lau of Troy. Again the Blue Devils came back and cruised past Georgia State's Felipe Jaworski and Giles Hussey, 6-1. Furman and Dickerson, who played together for the first time this year on Friday, face Davidson's Shamael Chaudhry and J.B. Gough at 9 a.m. Saturday in the consolation final.
