
Duke Cruises to 7-1 Record Saturday in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis team blazed through Saturday at the Charlotte 49ers Fall Invitational with a 5-1 singles mark and 2-0 doubles record that resulted in a pair of doubles consolation championships. Freshmen Spencer Furman and Nick Stachowiak advanced to their draws' respective singles finals on Sunday while the two captured consolation doubles titles on Saturday.
Furman picked up a pair of Saturday singles wins, downing Wood Benton of South Carolina 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals before topping Scott Webster of Appalachian State in a tough 7-6 (6), 6-3 decision. Furman is the No. 1 seed in the A1 flight and takes on the draw's No. 3 seed, Diego Quiroz of Winthrop, in Sunday's 9 a.m. championship. Furman is 3-0 in singles this fall, playing his only three singles matches this weekend.
In the A2 flight, Stachowiak, the top seed, breezed past Appalachian State's Jack Maddocks 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals before outlasting Maximillian Scholl of Gardner-Webb 6-2, 6-7 (1), 6-0 in the semifinals. Stachowiak faces No. 2 seed Henry Patten of UNC Asheville at 9:30 a.m. Sunday for the title. Stachowiak enters Sunday's match with an 11-3 singles record this fall.
Rounding out the singles action was sophomore Ryan Dickerson, who moved to the semifinals with a 7-6 (4), 6-0 triumph against Wofford's Haris Poric. Dickerson then fell to Patten, 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals. Dickerson ends his fall with a 5-3 singles mark.
In doubles, Duke took a pair of consolation titles with Stachowiak and sophomore Jason Lapidus, and Furman and Dickerson both winning. Stachowiak and Lapidus took down Charlotte's pair of Carl Solik and Francis Pare, 6-4, in the A1 flight. In the A2 flight, Furman and Dickerson topped Davidson's Shamael Chaudhry and J.B. Gough, 6-2. Both Blue Devil teams were playing together for the first time this weekend and finished 2-1.
