DURHAM, N.C.—The quartet of seniors Jack Bruckner, Danny Fowler, Ethan Powley and Thomas Zenker have been selected to lead the 2017 Duke men's lacrosse team as captains head coach John Danowski recently announced.
All four are first-time captains for the Blue Devils and key contributors to the program on and off the field. Each of them have played prominent roles on the field throughout their careers, but also are exemplary student-athletes with a combined nine ACC Academic Honor Roll awards.
Bruckner, a leader on attack for the past two seasons, enters his final year with 99 goals and 33 assists for 132 points. He became the 47th Blue Devil to record 100 career points last season and currently ranks 33rd in Duke history. A two-year starter on the attack after playing in the midfield as a rookie, Bruckner owns a pair of single-season goals marks with 47 in 2015 and 45 in 2016. In the classroom, Bruckner is a two-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member, sporting over a 3.0 GPA each of the past two seasons.
The Blue Devils' starting goalkeeper for the majority of the past two seasons, Fowler follows in the footsteps of his brother Brendan Fowler as a Duke lacrosse captain. The Wantagh, N.Y., native is 16-12 for his career and has a 10.62 goals against average and a .505 save percentage. He is a consummate leader on and off the field and has excelled in the classroom as a three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member.
Powley, a talented defenseman for the Blue Devils, has started the past two seasons for Duke's close defense. He led all Blue Devils last season with 21 caused turnovers and earned a spot on the ACC All-Tournament Team after recording three caused turnovers and six ground balls in the runner-up finish. He has 65 ground balls and 37 caused turnovers for his career. Powley is a member of the Navy ROTC program at Duke and juggles duties from both NROTC and Duke lacrosse throughout the year. He, like Bruckner, Zenker, and Fowler, also garnered ACC Academic Honor Roll recognition last year.
One of the most experienced Blue Devils in game action, Zenker has played in 53 career games and has helped anchor the defensive midfield throughout his three seasons. He owns eight goals and five assists for 13 points as a d-middie, while picking up 49 ground balls and forcing 17 caused turnovers. An exemplary student, Zenker is a three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll recipient and was voted to the All-ACC Academic Team his sophomore season.
Duke will kick off its 2017 season in February and is scheduled to host the 2017 ACC Championship April 28-30.
