DURHAM, N.C.—Duke scored three-first half goals en route to posting a 3-2 victory over Campbell in men's soccer action tonight at Koskinen Stadium. The win ends the Blue Devils' three-game skid heading into their regular season home finale Friday night against No. 4 Notre Dame.
Duke improves to 5-6-2 overall with the win, while Campbell falls to 5-7-0.
Junior forward Cameron Moseley continued his hot streak, netting his third goal in as many games and his team-best fifth of the year. Jared Golestani notched his second score of his career, while junior midfielder Cody Brinkman tallied his first career point with an assist.
“After going three games without a win, it's very difficult to accept,” said head coach John Kerr. “We're happy to on a Tuesday night to be on the right side of the ledger. We have a big game Friday night against Notre Dame and we'll have to be at our best.”
The Blue Devils were aggressive from the very start, playing direct and in behind the Campbell defense. Moseley nearly made it 1-0 just over a minute in as he tried to sneak a shot past the near post where Campbell goalkeeper Matthew Mozynski pushed it over the endline for a Duke corner kick.
Rookie Max Moser stepped up to the left corner flag and whipped a ball in to the back post where a Campbell defender tired to head it out of danger. However, his clearance attempt deflected off of another Camel player into the goal for an own goal and 1-0 Duke advantage just 1:45 into the game.
Just under 15 minutes later and somewhat against the run of play, Campbell netted the equalizer. Gabe Parris collected the ball just outside the box and slid a perfect through ball to Pepe Rangel who put it into the low left corner past Duke goalie Robert Moewes.
The tie game was short-lived as six minutes later Moseley took advantage of a good defensive effort from Brian White to net his team-best fifth goal of the year. White stripped a Campbell defender 20 yards from goal and touched it to Moseley for the one-on-one with the keeper.
The Blue Devils, controlling the run of play, extended their lead to two goals in the 35th minute on a fabulous early ball out of the midfield from Suniel Veerakone. A nice turn from Brinkman with a Campbell player on his back allowed the junior to touch the ball to Veerakone who quickly saw the open space behind the Camel's defense.
The rookie, playing with his head up, took advantage and sent the ball in for a streaking Golestani. The senior striker got one touch on it to pull away and slid it to the corner past Mozynski for the 3-1 lead at the break. Golestani also nearly added his second of the game late in the second half after great combination play, but slid it just wide of the goal.
Duke, taking advantage of the 3-1 lead, got good minutes from some of the bench players in the second half. The Blue Devils possessed the ball, but were unable to generate many quality scoring opportunities. However, Campbell had an even tougher time find space to attack Duke's defensive third. The Camels, however, took advantage of the one time with time and space to pull within one on a curling shot off the right foot of Josh Signey.
The Blue Devils buckled down in the final two minutes and nearly scored themselves en route to the 3-2 home victory. Campbell had just two shots on goal and only seven overall, while Duke fired 14 shots.
Moewes played 75 minutes, while Ben Hummel came in for the final 15. Mozynski made two saves for the Camels in the setback.
Duke will celebrate senior night Friday, Oct. 21 against No. 4 Notre Dame. The game will be televised on the Regional Sports Network. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
