NORFOLK, Va. – Graduate student Aisling Naughton recorded two goals to guide Duke to a 5-1 defeat of No. 19 Old Dominion Sunday afternoon.
The fourth-ranked Blue Devils (13-2) jumped out to a 4-0 lead and scored on five of their 13 shots on the day in an efficient offensive showing.
“In the beginning we really came out and played our game, kept the ball moving and created opportunities that we've been focusing on building,” said head coach Pam Bustin. “I'm really happy with the execution today but also the buildup and sustaining that throughout the game."
Duke broke open the scoring in the 11th minute when Naughton put away a feed from senior Heather Morris. The Blue Devils made it 2-0 on their 16th penalty corner goal of the season, with junior Ainsley Gill finishing on a feed from junior back Alyssa Chillano for her second tally of the year.
The defensive unit held off two penalty corner attempts by Old Dominion midway through the period, and Duke went on to launch a flurry of shots off a corner opportunity at the other end. Naughton capitalized for the second time and junior Ashley Kristen came up with a goal on a Naughton assist a short while later to make it 4-0.
The Monarchs got one back in the 32nd minute on a score by Alexa Ostoich, but the Blue Devils would head into halftime with the 4-1 advantage.
“First half we did a great job defensively, until the last five minutes, pushing up, taking care of our line, working together for double teams,” Bustin said. “We were great with our defensive organization and creating our outletting attack.”
Duke started off the second period with shots by Naughton and Kristen before Old Dominion drew a series of corners on its offensive end. Three Monarch shots were blocked by the Blue Devil defense and a fourth went wide to keep the margin at three with 15 minutes remaining.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Sammi Steele made a stop on a Monarch corner inside the final five minutes, and Duke earned a corner of its own within the final minute in regulation. Naughton and senior midfielder Robin Blazing provided assists as Chillano sealed the victory with a final corner goal.
For the contest, the Blue Devils held a 13-9 lead in the shot count while Old Dominion totaled nine corners to four by Duke.
“It was a tough road going left and going right of Durham but I thought the team handled it well,” Bustin said. “It's a big deal to come away with some wins on any road trip, but going to two different destinations and coming away with two wins is important for us moving forward.”
Up next, the Blue Devils return home to Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium to host North Carolina Saturday at 1 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
