CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Duke sophomore
Virginia Elena Carta turned in an even-par, 72, Saturday during the second round of the Tar Heel Invitational to pace the Blue Devils at the 6,379-yard, par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Carta collected three birdies in a span of five holes on the front nine and was two-under-par at one point, but suffered two bogeys on the back nine on her way to finishing with a 72. With rounds of 76 and 72, Carta is tied 34th overall individually with a 148. She hit 15 greens, 11 fairways and rolled 35 putts in the second round.
Senior
Sandy Choi collected the fifth eagle of her career on the 518-yard, par five 17th hole to finish with a two-over-par, 74. Choi, who hails from Seoul, South Korea, was 108 yards out and hit a nine iron. The ball took one bounce and went into the hole. Choi hit 12 fairways, 11 greens and rolled 30 putts.
After carding an even-par, 72, on day one, freshman
Ana Belac signed for a 76 Saturday and is tied T34th overall with a 148. Belac had early bogeys on No. 2 and No. 4, but rebounded with birdies on No. 6 and No. 9 to go along with four pars and a bogey on the seventh. After making the turn at one-over-par, 37, she closed with three bogeys on the back nine. Belac had 35 putts to go along with 13 greens and 11 fairways.
Junior
Lisa Maguire came back with a 77 in the second round, a day after totaling a 78. She is tied 75th overall with a 155. Maguire, who is from Cavan, Ireland, was five-over-par on the front nine, but settled down and played the final nine holes at even par with one birdie on the 165-yard, par three 14th. She had a team-best 27 putts, while hitting nine fairways and seven greens.
After registering a team-best two-under-par, 70, on day one, junior
Gurbani Singh carded a three-over-par, 75, and is tied 18th. She had bogeys on No. 2, No. 8, No. 11 and No. 12, before rolling in her lone birdie of the day on the 361-yard, par four 16th. Singh, who is from New Delhi, India, had 32 putts, 15 greens and 11 fairways Saturday.
As a team, Duke will enter the final round in 10th place overall trailing Wake Forest (569), Alabama (569), Ohio State (570), Arkansas (573), NC State (577), Virginia (580), South Carolina (583), Tennessee (585) and North Carolina (588). The Blue Devils have totaled rounds of 292 and 297 for a total of 589.
Duke will tee off Sunday in the final round beginning at 9:15 a.m., with a shotgun start. Admission is free. Live scoring will be available via www.GolfStat.com as well.
