
Duke With Solid Start to USTA/ITA Carolina Regional

CARY, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis team began the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional with an 11-7 record. Only singles action took place Friday at the Cary Tennis Park as the Blue Devils captured 11 main draw victories with four of their nine players advancing to the Round of 32 in the main draw.
Leading the way on Friday were sophomores Catalin Mateas and Vincent Lin, junior Nicolas Alvarez and freshman Nick Stachowiak.
Lin was the first Blue Devil to move to the main draw Round of 32 as he earned a comeback 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 win versus Andrew Schafer of South Carolina in his first match. In the second round, Lin downed East Carolina's Freddie McGeehan, 6-4, 6-1. Lin takes on No. 15 seed Adam Steryous of Furman Saturday at 8:30 a.m. to advance to the Round of 16.
Playing in just his second event this fall for Duke was Alvarez, who defeated Presbyterian's Joel Roberts, 6-0, 6-2 in the opening round. Alvarez, the No. 3 seed in the draw, followed with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph against Connor Thompson of UNC Greensboro. Alvarez faces Sebastian Schneider of Coastal Carolina at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
Mateas cruised past N.C. State's Gerogly Malyshev in the first round by a 6-2, 6-0 final. In the second contest, Mateas, the No. 10 seed, slipped past Sam Edwards of Clemson, 6-3, 6-3. Mateas faces Lorenz Schwab of Campbell at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
Stachowiak got off to a strong start, cruising past N.C. Central's Maksym Konovalov 6-0, 6-1 in the opening round before earning a very tight 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-1 victory versus Sam Swank of South Carolina.
Playing to a 1-1 day was freshman Robert Levine as the No. 12 seed in the draw. He picked up a 6-0, 6-2 opening round win versus N.C. Central's Brooks Campbell before falling 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Thomas Mayronne of South Carolina in the second round.
Senior TJ Pura earned an opening round win, downing Charleston's Juan Estevarena, 6-2, 7-6 (4). Pura then took on No. 11 seed Jack Murray of North Carolina and dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision.
Sophomore Ryan Dickerson picked up a win in his first contest, 6-2, 6-0 against Gabriel Dias of Winthrop. In the second match of the day, Dickerson fell to UNC Charlotte's Leonardo Menezes, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Sophomore Jason Lapidus fell in a close contest to open his Friday as N.C. Central's Gabriel Cucalon earned a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory. Lapidus also dropped a 6-4, 6-0 decision to USC Upstate's Ankush Arora.
Rounding out Duke's action Friday was junior Andrew DeJoy, who suffered a pair of setbacks in falling to Winthrop's Ruy Teixeira, 6-1, 6-3, and UNC Ashville's Henry Patten.
In addition to the singles action Saturday, Duke will play two rounds of doubles. The Blue Devil teams will be freshman Spencer Furman and Pura, Alvarez and Stachowiak, the No. 7 seed, Levine and Mateas, the No. 6 seed, and Lapidus and Lin.
