
Saturday Brings Wins at USTA/ITA Carolina Regional

CARY, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis team turned in an excellent performance Saturday at the Cary Tennis Park with sophomore Catalin Mateas and junior Nicolas Alvarez highlighting the day with singles victories to advance to the main draw Round of 16. The Blue Devils played one round of singles Saturday and two rounds of doubles.
In singles, Duke sent a four players into the main draw Round of 32, with Mateas and Alvarez continuing action into Sunday. Mateas recorded a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Lorenz Schwab of Campbell. Mateas will take on Bo Boyden of North Carolina on Sunday at 9 a.m. Sunday.
Alvarez will join Mateas in the main draw Round of 16 with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph versus Igor Saveljic of N.C. State. Alvarez, the No. 3 seed in the draw, faces Yancy Dennis of South Carolina at 9 a.m. Sunday to move to the quarterfinals.
The Blue Devils suffered a pair of singles losses in the Round of 32 as sophomore Vincent Lin and freshman Nick Stachowiak both bowed out with setbacks. Lin dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision to No. 15 seed Adam Steryous of Furman while Stachowiak was downed 6-4, 7-6 (4) to UNC's Ronnie Schneider, the No. 2 seed in the draw.
In doubles, Alvarez and Stachowiak rolled to the Round of 16 with two wins, topping Connor Thompson and Marcus Vidgren of UNCG 6-4, 6-4 and East Carolina's Will Bissett and Javier Reones 6-2, 6-1. Alvarez and Stachowiak, the No. 7 seed in the draw, play UNC Ashville's Henry Patten and Josh Swindler at 3 p.m. Sunday.
Duke's other undefeated team Saturday was sophomore Jason Lapidus and Lin. The two started with a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11) marathon win against Wake Forest's Sean Hill and Charles Parry. The afternoon featured a 6-2, 7-6 (5) triumph versus Lucas Cerbelli and Patrick Longest of Wofford. The Blue Devils face Furman's Trevor Croyder and Clarke Wilson on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Freshman Robert Levine and Mateas lost to South Carolina's Thomas Mayronne and Andrew Schafer 6-4, 6-2 in the main draw but came back for a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (2) win against UNC Charlotte's Max Benaim and Francis Pare. The duo plays Clemson's Robert Dudley and Sam Edwards Sunday at 3 p.m.
The pair of freshman Spencer Furman and senior TJ Pura dropped their initial match, falling 7-5, 6-4 to Clemson's Daffra Sanon and Igor Smelynaski, a seeded pair for the draw. Furman and Pura bounced back in the consolation bracket and remained alive in the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 win versus Diego Manzanas and Brandon Mills of Presbyterian. Furman and Pura continue action Sunday in the consolation bracket with a 3 p.m. match against USC Upstate's Felix Ewers and Lenhard Haupt.
