ORLANDO, Fla. – After opening the season Sunday in second place and only one shot off the lead at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate, the top-ranked Duke women's golf team slipped to fourth Monday, after turning in a three-over-par, 291, at the Reunion Resort's 6,245-yard, par 72 Watson Course
The Blue Devils turned in an 11-under-par, 277, in the opening round and trailed Southern California by only one stroke, but after a 291 in the second round Duke trails the Trojans by 21 strokes with only 18 holes remaining. Southern California carded a 17-under-par, 271, Monday to jump out to a commanding lead.
Duke featured a three-under-par score over its first nine holes, but the Blue Devils struggled to close the day out with a six-over-par score on the back nine.
Rounding out the field is Southern California (547), Texas AM (564), Arizona (567), Duke (568), Arkansas (570), Tennessee (572), Stanford (576), UCLA (578), South Carolina (579), Washington (581), LSU (583) and UCF (584).
Southern California holds three out of the top four golfers on the individual leaderboard, including leader Robynn Ree with a 10-under-par, 134.
After posting a five-under-par, 67, on day one, Blue Devil sophomore Leona Maguire collected an even par, 72, Monday and is now tied seventh with a five-under, 139. A product of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire opened with a birdie on No. 2, but was held without a birdie the rest of the way to go along with a bogey on the 371-yard, par four 10th.
Senior Celine Boutier enters the final round tied 12th with a three-under-par, 141, after notching rounds of 69 and 73. Boutier, who hails from Montrouge, France, totaled two birdies on the front nine on No. 1 and No. 6. She held a one-under-par ledger through 10 holes but the 2014 National Player of the Year closed with bogeys on No. 11 and No. 17. Boutier hit 16 greens, nine fairways and had 35 putts in the second round.
In her first collegiate tournament, rookie Virginia Elena Carta totaled a 73 Monday following carding a one-under-par, 71, in the opening round Sunday. She enters the final day of action tied for 23rd overall with a 144. Carta hit 17 greens, 12 fairways and had 36 putts in the second round. Over her first 36 holes of play at Duke, Carta has missed only three greens.
Junior Sandy Choi added a 74, while sophomore Gurbani Singh carded a 73 Monday to round out the Duke scores. Choi, a native of Seoul, South Korea, hit 16 greens, 11 fairways and had 36 putts in the second round. She featured only two bogeys on the card, which came on No. 4 and No. 5.
Singh carded a team-best three birdies in the second round, but a string of four consecutive bogeys from holes No. 10-13, left her with her second straight round of 73. She enters the final round tied for 36th overall. Singh hit 14 greens, 12 fairways and had 33 putts on the day.
Duke will tee off in Tuesday's final round beginning at 8:00 a.m., along with Arkansas and Tennessee.
