ORLANDO, Fla. – The top-ranked Duke women's golf team opened the 2015-16 campaign in Orlando, Fla., at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate over the last three days and concluded the 54-hole event in fourth place at the Reunion Resort's 6,245-yard, par 72 Watson Course.
After opening the tournament with an 11-under-par ledger Sunday, the Blue Devils closed the final 36 holes with a three-over-par score to drop from second to fourth place.  Duke registered 18 birdies in the first round and combined for a total of 23 over the final two days.  Southern California shot an impressive three-day score of 36-under-par, 828, to claim the team title.
“It's hard to say why the putts didn't fall the last couple days,” said Duke head coach Dan Brooks. “They certainly fell for Southern California. Our preparation has been good. We'll continue to do what we do.”
Following the Trojans on the team leaderboard was Arizona (851), Arkansas (854), Duke (856), Texas A&M (859), UCLA (862), Tennessee (863), Washington (865), South Carolina (872), Stanford (873), LSU (880) and UCF (886).  The Blue Devils totaled rounds of 277, 291 and 288 to finish at eight-under-par, 856.
Duke's top finisher was reigning 2015 National Player of the Year Leona Maguire with a three-day ledger of five-under-par, 211.  Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, carded her second straight round of 72 Tuesday, after opening the tournament with a five-under-par, 67.
Maguire kicked off the day with birdies on No. 1 and No. 6 and held a two-under-par score through eight holes.  Bogeys on No. 9 and No. 12 dropped her back to even par, before closing with a birdie on the 14th and a bogey on No. 18 along with four pars.  She hit 13 fairways, 15 greens and had 33 putts in the final round.
Karen Chung of Southern California notched individual medalist honors with a 12-under-par, 204, as she notched three straight rounds of 68.
Blue Devil senior Celine Boutier earned her 23rd career top 20 finish as she carded rounds of 68, 73, and 72 for a three-under-par, 213.  Boutier connected on a birdie at the 386-yard, par four No. 4 early in her round Tuesday, but suffered bogeys on No. 5, No. 7 and No. 9 to drop back to two-over.  A native of Montrouge, France, Boutier regrouped and rolled in birdies on No. 10, No. 12 and No. 15 to get back to one-under for the day.  She suffered a bogey on the 18th to finish at even par, while hitting eight fairways, 11 greens and rolling a team-best 28 putts.
Firing Duke's lowest round to close the tournament, sophomore Gurbani Singh notched a one-under, 71, on her way to placing tied 28th with a one-over-par, 217.  Singh, who is from New Delhi, India, rolled in three birdies during a span of eight holes in the middle of her round.  She hit 16 greens, 12 fairways and had 32 putts to close action.
Freshman Virginia Elena Carta had an exciting finish with three birdies over her final five holes as she turned in her second consecutive round of 73.  A product of Udine, Italy, Carta placed tied 28th with a one-over, 217, over the 54 holes of play.  Carta dialed in her approach shots down the stretch that featured birdies on No. 14, No. 15 and No. 17.  She also had a lip out birdie chance on the 18th as well, while totaling a team-high five birdies.  Carta finished the day hitting 10 fairways, 16 greens and having 34 putts
Duke junior Sandy Choi earned a tied 38th overall finish with rounds of 71, 74 and 75 to finish with a four-over, 220.  In Tuesday's final round, Choi played her final nine holes at even par with birdies on No. 10 and No. 15.  She hit 13 fairways, 14 greens and had 35 putts in her round.
Duke will next compete in Chapel Hill, N.C., from Oct. 9-11 at the Tar Heel Invitational.
