ORLANDO, Fla. – The top-ranked Duke women's golf team sits in second after the first day of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate at the Reunion Resort's 6,245-yard, par-72 Watson Course with an 11-under-par 277. The Blue Devils trail Southern California by just one stroke after the Trojans posted a 12-under-par 276 Sunday.
Texas A&M rounds out the top three after day one. The Aggies recorded a 10-under-par 278 and lead fourth-place Arkansas (284) and Tennessee (284) by six strokes.
Duke sophomore Leona Maguire registered a five-under-par 67, carding seven birdies, to pace the Blue Devils. The Cavan, Ireland, native was at even par over the first six holes, but picked up five birdies the rest of the day to move to five under.
Maguire is tied for second individually with Arkansas' Gaby Lopez. South Carolina's Katelyn Dambaugh owns the individual lead with a seven-under-par 65.
Duke's Celine Boutier sits just one stroke behind Maguire with a four-under-par 68. Boutier did not suffer a bogey for the day and carded birdies on two of the final three holes to finish with a 68.
Boutier sits in a four-way tie for fourth with USC's Karen Chung and Robynn Ree as well as Texas A&M's Bianca Fabrizio.
Both Sandy Choi and Virginia Elena Carta are tied for 20th overall after turning in rounds of 71 Sunday. Both players registered three birdies and two bogeys on the day.
Duke and USC were the only two teams to place four players in the top 20 of the individual standings.
Gurbani Singh had a 73 in round one and sits tied forth 34th overall. Singh rolled in a birdie on the 15th hole to get back to even par, but closed with a bogey on 17 to finish at +1.
Maguire will be recognized Sunday evening as the 2014-15 ANNIKA Award winner and National Player of the Year. The second round of the tournament begins Monday, Sept. 28 at 8 a.m.
