GoDuke.com: What are some of your favorite lacrosse memories from your time at Duke?
Emma Hamm: A lot of my favorite lacrosse memories from Duke involved music. From changing song lyrics to pump the team up before big games, to catching Kerstin off guard by bursting into “Pocketful of Sunshine” by Natasha Bedingfield as she was leading our silent MVA (meditate-visualize-affirm) all the way to creating the Duke Lax “Call Me Maybe” video which has 150,000 views-- music was just as key to our success and happiness as anything else.
GoDuke.com: What lessons did you take with you from your time on and off the field?
EH: The lessons from being a student-athlete at Duke were incredible. A lesson that first popped up into my head is the importance of values. Both loyalty and gratitude stand out to me. The feeling of wanting to work harder to get into turbo mode for Howser or wanting to take a risk because my teammate has my back is truly powerful. I feel so lucky to have been surrounded by a support system at all times and certainly learned the importance of chanting your thanks (E. Cobb Stephenson, E. Cobb Stephenson...) to always make sure that the Duke Lax Love was spread.
GoDuke.com: Who were some teammates that influenced you?
EH: I would be the first one to tell you that I felt like I learned constantly from every player on the team-- it was cool to be in an atmosphere where everyone felt comfortable enough to have a say or make an impact. I think back to when I was most impressionable, as a freshman -- and specifically remember wanting to soak up the leadership abilities and values of Abigail Meyer and Rachel Shack. Those two people knew exactly who they were and although they may not have always been on the field, the natural passion and ability to lead from them were tangible at all times.
GoDuke.com: How did your education prepare you for your professional career?
EH: The entire Duke experience was the best preparation for the real world, but the classes and professors specifically helped me figure it out what I liked, didn't like and how I was able to work the most effectively. I realized my love for combining psychology with business in classes like Psychology of Consumers, which helped solidify my interest in the marketing world.
GoDuke.com: How did you become interested in pursuing a career in the marketing and advertising profession?
EH: After majoring in Psychology and then getting my Masters at Fuqua, I knew I wanted to be in the marketing world, but not specifically advertising. I stumbled upon an agency in Philadelphia where I was lucky enough to get an internship which turned into a full-time position. The advertising world is non-stop, exciting and full of constant changes.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite aspect of your job?
EH: My favorite aspect of my job is seeing and growing with the project every step of the way because it means that I get to deal with a lot of people in many different ways. From understanding the problem through a conversation with the client, to developing a strategic roadmap, to getting the rest of the agency on the same page to provide solutions-- I get to see it from start to (beautiful) finish. I love people, understanding how they operate and problem solving, which I get to be involved with all at the same time.
GoDuke.com: What have been some keys to reaching your current level of success?
EH: Asking questions, saying yes to opportunities even if your plate is super full and lots of laughing. No plate is ever as full as a Duke student-athlete, so anything is possible!
GoDuke.com: What advice would you give to current or future student-athletes?
EH: We are so lucky to have coaches who understand the importance of a well-rounded life at college, so go, do and see as much as you can. Be grateful, be loyal and get music involved as much as possible.
