Blue Devils Finish Clemson Invitational on High Note

CLEMSON, S.C. – Against a deep and talented field on day two of the Clemson Invitational, the Duke rowing team fought through a steady rain on Lake Hartwell to earn a pair of fourth place finishes. The Blue Devils' 2V8 and 3V8 took fourth while the V8 finished fifth, the V4 sixth and the 2V4 seventh.

Of the 11 squads Duke competed against Sunday, four were ranked in the latest Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association nation poll.

As it did Saturday, the Blue Devils' 2V8 paced the performances with a fourth place showing Sunday morning, finishing in 6:48.0. It was the boat's best time of the weekend, cutting 1.8 seconds off the Saturday afternoon mark. Indiana won the Sunday morning race in 6:35.1.

Duke's 3V8 also took fourth Sunday with a time of 7:14.1, more than a 15 second improvement from its first time on Saturday morning. Syracuse placed first in 6:48.6.

The V8 finished its weekend with a fifth place showing, clocking a time of 6:46.5. The time was one second slower than the Saturday afternoon race, but nearly 6.5 seconds ahead of its first mark on Saturday. Indiana claimed first with a time of 6:25.7.

The Blue Devils' V4 and 2V4 completed the day with the V4 placing sixth in 7:58.2 and the 2V4 finishing seventh in 8:03.0. Texas took the V4 race in 7:21.4 while Virginia won the 2V4 in 7:18.5.

The Clemson Invitational ended the regular season for Duke, which next competes in the ACC Championship. The Blue Devils will return to Lake Hartwell for the league's prime two-day event May 15-16.
