ST. LOUIS –Duke University redshirt junior Conner Hartmann suffered his first loss of the 2015 NCAA Wrestling Championship, falling to No. 3 seed Kyven Gadson of Iowa State in the semifinal round. Hartmann moves into the consolation bracket for a chance to wrestle in the third-place match.
After locking up his second consecutive All-America honor in the afternoon session with a thrilling win in the quarterfinal, Hartmann was matched up against the three-time All-American from Iowa State.
Gadson scored a takedown right off the bat for the early 2-0 advantage. Hartmann quickly escaped to bring the score to 2-1 and the wrestlers spent the rest of the first period feeling each other out. The Cyclone redshirt senior extended his lead to 3-1 with an escape to start the second period. Hartmann remained on the offensive in taking shots, but was unable to get in on Gadson.
With one stalling warning against him and Hartmann in the down position to start the third, Gadson was excellent in riding out the third period for the 4-1 victory. Hartmann was able to get to his feet numerous times, but was unable to break the hold of Gadson for the escape.
The loss was just the third of the year for Hartmann, who is 29-3 overall. He will be back in action Saturday in the medal rounds. Hartmann will wrestle No. 5 seed Scott Schiller of Minnesota to earn the right to compete for the third-place title. Schiller edged Hartmann 4-3 in last year's NCAA Championship.
Duke sits in 27th place with 14 points. The Blue Devils finished 29th a year ago.
