CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Redshirt freshman Rebecca Greenwell poured in 22 points and broke the Duke freshman record for three-pointers made in a season to send the 11th-ranked Blue Devils to a 71-45 victory over Virginia Thursday evening in John Paul Jones Arena. Head coach Joanne P. McCallie's squad picked up its sixth consecutive win and improved to 19-6 on the season and 10-2 in ACC play.
Greenwell sank a game-high four treys in the contest while senior Ka'lia Johnson supplied 11 points and freshman Azurá Stevens registered a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds. On the evening, Duke outrebounded the Cavaliers by a 42-25 margin and shot 44 percent from the field (26-of-59).
An early seven points from Greenwell propelled the Blue Devils to an 11-4 advantage five minutes into the contest. Stevens and senior Elizabeth Williams joined Greenwell in extending the lead into double digits.
Aided by several Virginia turnovers, Duke rattled off nine unanswered points and held the Cavaliers scoreless for over four minutes late in the half. Stevens led the Blue Devils' attack on the boards, pulling down eight first-half rebounds. She and Williams had eight points each and Greenwell nine as Duke took a 40-21 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
As a team, Duke shot 48 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes and recorded 14 points off of Virginia turnovers.
Greenwell kicked off the second half with a quick five points, including her second three-pointer, to give the Blue Devils their largest lead at 22. The Owensboro, Ky., native continued to pace Duke from the perimeter, pushing her past former Blue Devil Abby Waner's freshman record of 50 three-pointers made in a season with 53.
Both teams struggled shooting from the floor over the next stretch, but the Blue Devils were still able to maintain a 9-0 run. Stevens tallied her fifth double-double of the season and the visiting squad stretched its advantage in the rebounding category to 34-18 with just over 10 minutes to play.
Johnson broke into double-figure scoring as Duke continued to lead the Cavaliers by over 20 points. Virginia closed out the contest on a 15-13 run but it was not enough to overcome the 30-point deficit.
Williams finished with nine points and eight rebounds and sophomore Kendall Cooper added eight points and eight boards, while junior Mercedes Riggs came off the bench to fire a pair of long-range baskets.
Sarah Imovbioh led the Cavaliers with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Duke continues its four-game road stretch Monday, Feb. 16 at Notre Dame. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 9 p.m.
