DURHAM, N.C. – A pair of Duke swimmers swept this week's ACC accolades, with sophomore Lindsay Schlichte earning ACC Female Swimmer of the Week honors and classmate Mike Seaberg taking home ACC Male Swimmer of the Week recognition after both turned in career-best performances at the Carolina College Invitational.
Competing at the inaugural edition of the two-day event in Chapel Hill, N.C., Schlichte started off the meet Saturday by winning the women's 500-yard freestyle in a season-best 4:54.45. She returned to the water later in the day to register a career-best time of 1:51.89 in a second-place showing in the 200 freestyle. Sunday's action saw the Garden City, N.Y., native drop nearly 30 seconds from her previous season-best in the 1,650 freestyle, as she tapped the wall at 17:08.86.
Seaberg also impressed at the Carolina College Invitational, breaking into Duke's all-time top 10 in the men's 100 breaststroke with a 56.02 clocking, good for first place in the finals heat. He earned additional personal records in the 50 freestyle (20.63) and the 200 breaststroke (2:03.21) while joining teammates Adriaan Venter, Benedict Parfit and Jack Forese on the Blue Devils' 200 freestyle relay. That group combined for a time of 1:21.72, which marked a season-best for the program and ranked ninth in program history.
The Duke swimmers and divers return to action at the 2015 ACC Championships, with the women's meet set for Feb. 18-21 and the men's meet Feb. 25-28. Both conference championships will be held at Georgia Tech's Aquatic Center in Atlanta.
