DURHAM, N.C.—For the second consecutive season the Duke men's lacrosse team will be one of the featured teams in the 2016 Cobb County Classic at Kennesaw State University. The Blue Devils will face off against reigning NCAA Champion Denver in the headline game Feb. 20.
Duke and the Pioneers will be the premier matchup of the three games scheduled for the classic. The other two games feature Hobart vs. Siena at 9 a.m., Notre Dame vs. Georgetown at 11:30 a.m. All three games will be played at Fifth Bank Stadium on the campus of Kennesaw State University.
The 2015 matchup between the two powerhouse programs did not disappoint as the Pioneers used a 6-1 fourth-quarter run to come away with the 17-13 victory. Myles Jones and Justin Guterding led the Blue Devils with five points apiece, while Luke Aaron made 12 saves in goal.
For Denver it was Jack Bobzien pacing the offense with six goals, while Connor Cannizzaro had three goals and five assists. Trevor Baptiste was outstanding at the faceoff X, winning 25-of-34 restarts, including 17-of-19 in the second half. All three of those Pioneers return in 2016.
The Blue Devils return each of their starters from that game last season, but will miss the services of defensive midfielder Will Haus and Pat Resch, along with longstick midfielder Brian Dailey. Overall, Duke returns 33 players from last year's squad, including the entire starting lineup.
Danowski, in his 10th season at the helm, welcomes back 81 percent of the scoring from a year ago as well as the overall core to the defensive unit. Kyle Rowe returns to the field after hitting his stride at the X, finishing the year with a 61 percent success rate and 63 ground balls.
Tickets for the Cobb County Classic are currently on sale. Tickets can be purchased online at wherekennesawplays.com or by calling the Fifth Third Bank Stadium Box Office at (470) 578-4849.
The Blue Devils finished the 2015 season with 12-6 record and advanced to the ACC Championship game before falling to Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament first round.
