DURHAM, N.C.-- New to the Blue Devil women's basketball program this season is junior guard, Lexie Brown. Brown transferred to Duke over the summer after having played for the University of Maryland her freshman and sophomore years. Because of the move, she is ineligible to play until the 2016-17 season due to NCAA transfer rules. Despite not being able to see action on the court this season, Brown felt her move to Duke was still the right call.
Brown was an All-America standout at Maryland her first two seasons with more than 100 three-pointers made, 825 points, 310 assists and over 120 steals in 70 contests. Brown became known as one of the best three-point shooters in the nation. Last season, she registered a career-best 69 treys, including a season-high five against Princeton in the NCAA Tournament, and hit at least one three-pointer in 33 games. Her NCAA Final Four experience will be an added boost to a young Duke squad.
Keeping Brown at the top of her game while she's out insures that she will be ready when the time comes for her to play. Brown hopes to be at her best when she's called out onto the court in 2016-17.
However, her contributions to the team can be measured far beyond physically playing. Despite her redshirt season, Brown has managed to become a leader for her team. Her experience, work ethic and talent as a student-athlete earned her a spot as a captain this year. She is grateful for the title and is honored that her fellow players and coaches recognize her as such a vital member of the team.
Head coach Joanne P. McCallie, utilizes all of her players as much as she can. She said, “Everyone has roles. Everyone has different roles. It's special and it makes a great team. Lexie has a chance to share her Final Four experiences, to challenge her teammates and actually learn Duke basketball.”
To keep her motivated, McCallie has challenged Brown to be a practice All-America this year. Brown has accepted the challenge and wants to do her best to make that possible.
“My goal in practice is hands-down that if someone were to walk into practice they could point at me and say she's one of the best players on this team,” Brown explained.
Making sure her players have the ability to adjust as circumstances change has been something McCallie insists on. She herself was also a basketball player at Northwestern and says that she understands the different perspectives that her girls face as student-athletes.
To keep her body fit and more of her time occupied, Brown has been training for a half marathon in March. She wanted to do a full marathon but her mother convinced her to do a half marathon because it will be easier on her body. The event is 13.1 miles long and requires a fair amount of endurance. Brown trains four days a week and averages about four miles.
“Every mile or so you can stop and get water, but I'm training hard. There will be bands playing and stuff like that so it's supposed to be really fun,” says Brown.
A fun-spirited, friendly competition is a great way to keep in shape for Brown. She is determined to perform to the best of her abilities when she steps back on the court in 2016-17. Her positive attitude and determination as a player have helped her to focus on improving for her next season of basketball as a Blue Devil. With the help of her family, coaches and teammates Brown is looking forward to her time on the court at Duke.
