DURHAM, N.C. – Head coach Megan Cooke Carcagno and the Duke rowing program are excited to announce the signing of Bella Miller to a National Letter of Intent. Miller, from Wilmette, Ill., is currently a senior at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Ill., and is set to join the Blue Devil roster in the fall of 2016.
Miller has rowed for the New Trier since 2012.
"Bella is another very competitive and driven young athlete who is right in line with the culture of our team," assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Chuck Rodosky said. "She holds her team's 2k record and continues to improve that number because of her competitive attitude and nature. She is another example of exactly what we were looking for in this 2016 recruiting class."
Miller recently answered a trio of questions about her choosing Duke for her collegiate years.
Why Duke?
"Duke was the best possible place for me in every aspect. First off, it pairs elite academics with support for athletes in every aspect. With it being a top research institution in the research triangle, it makes it a really exciting place to be going into any science field. I hope to be involved in research while there.
"The environment at Duke makes you proud to be an athlete, and it offers all of the academic support that you need."
What do you look forward to with rowing in college?
"I'm extremely excited to see where we take Duke rowing. It's an up-and-coming team. I know with the other recruits, we can take it to a new level. I hope to compete in the NCAAs. With the combination of coaches who will be pushing us to our max and training facilities, I know we're all going to improve drastically. I can't wait for this to be in action."
What was the most surprising thing you learned about Duke University in your recruiting?
"Duke offers CAPE (Collegiate Athlete Premedical Experience). In this, female athletes get the opportunity to have clinical experiences in the Duke hospital. Being an athlete interested in medicine, this is a perfect fit for me. This program was founded by female athletes, for female athletes."
This program is composed of highly focused Duke undergraduate female athletes who have an interest in medicine. It provides them unprecedented access and insight into the medical world. The goal is to engage them with female mentors, role models, lectures, discussion groups and clinical experiences. It is the only program in the country that gives undergrads such deep exposure to the field of medicine.
