Durham, N.C. – GoDuke.com recently sat down with Longwood, Fla., native and senior rower Hannah Hewitt to reflect on her four years at Duke.
GoDuke.com: What is a hidden gem either in Durham or on Campus?
Hannah Hewitt: Pizzeria Toro and Cocoa Cinnamon are two places that I absolutely love because the atmosphere is so warm and inviting. If I'm ever having a bad day, I know I can go to one of these places and get a latte or pizza and feel better.
GoDuke.com: What's next in life after Duke?
HH: Law school.
GoDuke.com: What is your proudest academic achievement at Duke?
HH: My proudest academic achievement at Duke is making academic honor roll for the last three years and completing my Sanford School of Public Policy internship requirements.
GoDuke.com: How did you get started in rowing and what made you fall in love with your sport?
HH: My cousins actually got me started when I was in middle school and they were on the high school team. It became a family sport and I loved riding to practice with them. I also loved the thrill of competing and being fast.
GoDuke.com: What does Duke mean to you?
HH: Duke to me is an amazing place full of challenges on and off the water. It's a place for growth, experience and achieving the impossible, despite how cheesy all of that sounds.
GoDuke.com: What is a road trip memory you'll always have with you?
HH: The road trip memory I'll always have is the bus ride from the Princeton Chase freshman year because there's a long-standing tradition that the freshmen have to create and perform a song. Ours was awesome!
GoDuke.com: What is one lesson Duke rowing, or your teammates, have taught you that you'll carry with you long after you leave Duke?
HH: One lesson that I've learned from my teammates is to always be my goofy, fun-loving self. To not be afraid of failure and to never give up!
GoDuke.com: What do you want a team 20 years from now to look back at your career and know?
HH: I want the team to know that I'm very proud of Duke rowing and all the accomplishments we made during my four years.
