KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Duke men's golf team shot 293 (+5) as a group on Sunday to finish the first day of the Kiawah Classic by Aramark in a tie for seventh place.
The Blue Devils will head into the second round just six shots off the pace set by Charleston Southern with a first-round 287 (-1).
“This golf course is narrow and tight, especially off the tee, and that puts a premium on what you need to do play well,” Duke head coach Jamie Green said. “For one-under to be the lead after there not being very much wind today shows how tough this golf course is. Our hope for tomorrow is to keep balls in play and focus on what we can control.”
Junior Max Greyserman carded an even-par 72 on Sunday to pace the Blue Devils, finishing the day in a tie for 16th place. Sophomore Adam Wood shot 73 (+1) to wrap up the day in a tie for 28th, while freshman Alex Smalley and junior Matt Oshrine both shot 74 (+2) to complete day one in a tie for 42nd. Sophomore Jake Shuman rounded out the Duke lineup in a tie for 52nd with a total of 75 (+3) on Sunday.
“We were proud of Max for his resiliency today,” Green said. “He saved a few shots today in the face of adversity, and that was really the difference in his round as opposed to some of our other guys. Max being able to do that was big for our team, and also for him and his confidence going forward.”
Junior Alexander Matlari, playing as an individual, shot 76 (+4) on Sunday and finished the day in a tie for 63rd.
Tee times begin at 6:30 a.m. on Monday. Live scoring for the Kiawah Classic is available at golfstatresults.com.
