KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Duke men's golf team was in red numbers at the Kiawah Classic by Aramark on Tuesday, firing a six-under 282 as a group to surge into a tie for third with one round left to play.
The Blue Devils stand at one-under for the tournament with a total of 575, nine strokes behind leader Charleston Southern.
“I was certainly pleased today and I know they guys were more satisfied with today's round than yesterday,” Duke head coach Jamie Green said. “We did an excellent job of being less affected by things we couldn't control. The guys focused and enjoyed the process, and the result was a diligent pursuit of a good round of golf.”
Sophomore Adam Wood and junior Max Greyserman will head into the final round in a tie for ninth place with totals of 141 (-3) after Wood shot a 68 (-4) on Tuesday and Greyserman carded a 69 (-3).
An early eagle helped Wood shoot one-under on the front on Tuesday before he caught fire on the back with three birdies and no bogeys. The effort was his seventh round of the season in the 60s, which already ties him for eighth on Duke's single-season chart.
Greyserman was even through nine holes before going three-under on the back nine on the strength of an eagle on No. 10. He will enter play on Tuesday in search of his first top-10 showing of the season.
Sophomore Jake Shuman shot an even-par 72 on Monday and freshman Alex Smalley shot 73 (+1) as both Blue Devils finished the second round with totals of 147 (+3), good for a tie for 32nd place. Junior Matt Oshrine is tied for 40th with a total of 148 (+4) after shooting 74 (+2) on Monday.
“It was great to see guys battle and get the most out of their rounds today,” Green said. “From top to bottom, I was pleased with our effort. Adam and Max were very calm, which allowed them to hit some great golf shots. Even Matt Oshrine, even though we didn't end up counting his round, really battled and showed some grit out there.”
Playing as an individual, junior Alexander Matlari is tied for 66th with a total of 152 (+8).
Final-round competition will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday with a shotgun. Live scoring for the Kiawah Classic is available at golfstatresults.com.
