WILMINGTON, N.C. – The fifth-ranked Duke women's golf team opened with a solid start at the 2015 Landfall Tradition as the Blue Devils lead by two strokes, after carding a one-under-par, 287, Friday at the 6,157-yard, par 72 Pete Dye Course located at the Country Club of Landfall.
The Blue Devils (287) hold the team lead ahead of Oklahoma State (289) with UNC Wilmington (290), Notre Dame (291), Michigan State (291), NC State (295), Purdue (296), Clemson (298), Alabama (299), Virginia (301) and South Carolina (301) rounding out the top 10.
Leading the Duke charge in Friday's opening round was junior
Sandy Choi, who fired a four-under-par, 68, and trails Notre Dame's Isabella DiLisio (67) by one stroke on the individual leaderboard. Choi, who hails from Seoul, South Korea, kicked off her day with birdies on No. 3, No. 6 and No. 7 to take the individual lead with a three-under-par ledger.
Choi suffered a bogey on the ninth hole, but responded with back-to-back birdies on the 12th and 13th holes to get to four-under-par. She closed with five straight pars to finish with a 68. Choi hit 14 fairways, 14 greens and had a season-best 28 putts. She stuck her approach shots on No. 7 and No. 13 to one foot as she posted her most consistent round of the season.
Her round of 68 matched a career best 18-hole score for the 2014-15 All-ACC selection.
Sophomore
Leona Maguire totaled her seventh straight round of even or under par to open the 2015-16 campaign as she signed for a one-under-par, 71. She will enter the second round tied eighth overall, after hitting a team-high 16 greens, 12 fairways and rolling 33 putts. Maguire, who is from Cavan, Ireland, opened with a bogey on No. 1, but came back to card her first of three birdies on the day at the second hole.
Maguire suffered her second bogey on the 490-yard, par five 12th hole and went on to close the afternoon with back-to-back birdies on No. 15 and No. 16 to finish with a 71.
Freshman
Virginia Elena Carta is tied 21st after the first 18 holes, following a one-over, 73. A native of Udine, Italy, Carta totaled 11 pars during her first 12 holes as she mixed in a bogey on No. 6. She then notched birdies on No. 13 and No. 16 along with bogeys on No. 15 and No. 17 to finish with a 73. Carta hit 11 fairways, 15 greens and had 34 putts.
Both senior
Celine Boutier and sophomore
Gurbani Singh turned in three-over-par rounds of 75 Friday and are tied 36th overall.
Singh, a product of New Delhi, India, featured Duke's best start to the day with three birdies over her first five holes and was three-under-par to rank first on the individual leaderboard. She couldn't maintain the under par score as she closed with six birdies the rest of the way.
The 2014 National Player of the Year and two-time All-America, Boutier also had a good start with a birdie on the second hole, but was held without another one the rest of the way.
Duke had a very hot start to the day as a team with nine birdies during the first seven holes and was six-under-par. A four-over final nine led to Duke shooting a one-under ledger. The Blue Devils shot three-over-par on par five holes Friday.
The Blue Devils will tee off in the second round beginning at 10:09 a.m., Saturday along with Oklahoma State and UNC Wilmington. Fans can follow the action via live scoring at www.GolfStat.com.
